POLICE have warned revellers at Nimbin's MardiGrass festival that
marijuana use will not be tolerated.
Richmond local area commander Superintendent Bruce Lyons has warned that
drug laws will not be relaxed for the three-day event.
"Visitors and locals alike are warned that any use, sale or consumption
of illegal drugs observed by police will be acted upon," he said.
MardiGrass has in the past featured open cannabis use, with people
handing out joints and taking part in roll-your-own competitions.
Nimbin Hemp Embassy spokesman Michael Balderstone has said that the new
hardline approach could be a mistake.
"This could provoke an extreme reaction."
