when hand is placed at top of plants and you can leave it there for a minute or 2 without it get'n hot then the light is at the right level
right now with my setup i keep my 1k about 24 inches above plants
if it's air cooled then right up to the glass ;)

my room is about 4*4 and all coated in mylar. I had the best results with my light about 4-5 ft above my plants. I found the entire plant got more light and never showed heat stress :D

i might try that filla as mine is 5 x 5 x 6 and let the plants grow into the stronger light as they get taller

I'd go with what CB said with the hand trick under the light, problem is some strains will just shoot up and u will have to have em a bit away so bear in mind, again all depends what you wanna do urself but strains under that light as some vars are gonna be different than the others(some taller than others some shorter etc etc)
U wanna go for tight compact budspots to get your lovely forming kola's hence having your light as close as you can get without the factor of heat stress!!;)
