Can someone tell me when it is time to sex the plant, i think i would switch to flowering at about 18 to 24 in. tall, but do you sex just before flowering, all info appreciated

a plant normaly shows sex at weeks 3 - 5 of veg.

i usally veg 4 week's and by then I know plant sex, if not when i go into 12/12 the rest will show in a week or 2

usally at 4 weeks veg my plants are 24 inches tall or so and have alternating nodes and are ready to flower ;)

the plant will tell you by starting to get flowers these first come on to all plants they are called preflowers i can useuly see them on the 8th set of leaves but ive never grown a pure sativa either but im changeing that i bought some haze seeds from the local headshop but i think theyll show at the 8th node also

Just thought I'd throw in my pennies worth.
Two ways I tell sex. Depends on patience.
1. Take a cutting and root it. and sex the clone. I find its less stressful on the plant. I do this after the plant has an alternating node. (about week 4)
2. Veg. the plant until it shows. ussually 5-6 weeks for me.

I don't clone for sex I ussually wait until it shows during veg.

Another method, if you don't have space for the cutting method.
Once the plant shows alternating growth nodes during vegging (24/0 or 18/6), they are ready to be put into 12/12. After 2-4 weeks of 12/12, the plant will show obvious signs of sex.

This is my favorite way of sexing plants if you don't have space for cuttings method, which is probly the best way (if you have the space) cause if the cutting turns out to be female then you got the female clone to be planted to become a donor (or 'mother' plant) and then you can flower out the original donor female, which is ready to be put into 12/12.

cover a branch with a black bag and tie bag round stem to be sure theres no light getting in for 12 hours on ..12 hours off...only that branch will flower showing its nuts or bolts;)

i honestly reckon its strain dependent in vege
i have some strains that show at about week 7 from seed
and some as cranky allready said
the best method imo is the clone for sex one

another thing ive done b4 for outdoors
is to switch to 12/12 as early as poss
once sex is shown rip boys out
take your star girls from inside to out
and early in the season plant them outdoors
and with the long days they revert back to vege
then you leave it to mother nature

papper bag a branch for 2-4 weeks that one branch will show sex ,if male you can collect pollen in bag and tie around female branch to cross breed & avoid your whole plant or garden from being pollinated! If all you want to do is sex the plant this works well and saves time! Hope this can help.:cool:
