you dont need HID's. I've gone start to finish under fluorescents and was pleased. HID's are really only for canopy penetration if you have lots of really tall plants. besides, a mixed spectrum floro blend is amazing:D
you can go ful term with HID's too. I don't recomment starting seeds under HID's as it's tough to get them close w/o burning babies and HPS makes things stretch.
If you are determined to go HID then I'd say fire it up once you see your plants doing poorly under floros. Try running both HID/floros. Best results ever:D
a Q/Q answer though? hmmm.... maybe when they're about 6" tall I'd ho HID

I kept my two largest plants for about a month under 4, 40 watt tube fluoros. They work fine, and they could have stayed under there longer, but i have a strong feeling they wouldn't be up to their potential. It's great to keep the light so close, if you have the time to raise it every morning and every night.
When my plants started to grow wider than the footprint of the fluoros, that's when i switched.
BTW, when i did switch, I noticed a lot more upward growth than before. Right away. Cause you have to keep the light further away, but 400 HPS beats 160fluoro anyday.

It doesnt really matter if you use HID's, but they have great light penetration.
As long as you stick to 50w/sqft and above you will be lit optimally...many growers use less with good results but 50/ft has been a good rule of thumb (w/o co2 enrichment)

what im looking to do is have a 4 ftx 4 ft room, about 6-7 feet high probably, and have 4 plants in soil under a 400 wt light. Now i plan on getting a MH for veging and a HPS for flowering, but is the flor better for seedlings/cutlings? or would the MH work just as good?
and which reflector is the best, what sieze/shape?

I personally start my plant under HID and get great results. While you maybe wasting some energy because of wasted light it will not hurt your plants.
which reflector is the best
Daystar AC from Hydrofarm. It has a wide footprint with the lowest dip in light loss in the center of the canopy.
I got one a few months ago and it's my favorite reflector yet.

um, with the wasted energy, i look at it as maybe a plus, cause you wont get the say good 320 watt drop in electricity for a month, or a month and a half then it be back on full time, instead they wouldnt really look if the light was out for say 2-3 days if planned right.

hey,
i usually put mine under the hid metal halide once thet are into their 4 or 5 leaf..
imo its up to the individual, and the amount of rapid growth they want, when they want it ....
ive got 1 under flouro and 1 under hps
and the hps wins for growth by far..
take care
happy growing

Hey, mind if I jump in?
I have a little veg box. w/ (2) soft white and (2) cool white 42W compact spiral florous in about 2. sq.ft. Great success so far. But still believe in an HPS for flower. Makes all the difference in the world. IMHO

yeah i work a veg box that has has 2 floro tubes and a CFL (for red spectrum)
as long as you LST or scrog the plants will be busy and have a lot of budsites, once into flower they stretch nicley and predictably (except for this dang SHAMAN :hmmmm: )
but floros work great to veg out, then HPS and CFLs for flower
just my $0.02,
Peace
