The Lost Art Of Old Skool Oil

Ok before i start this thread i want to tell you how damn DANGEROUS this method is. It involves boiling alchol on a stove, so one can only imagine how EXTREAMLY EXPLOSIVE this method truly is.You must have an extreamly well ventilated area to do this and you should only do this if you know what you are doing. A careless person could hurt themselves very bad, burn down your house, or even die if it was to explode in the persons face.:( :mad:

This is what you will need to get started:

1-10 gallon metal pot.
1-5 gallon metal pot
1-roll of paper towel (used for filtering)
1- metal colender with legs
1- metal bowl ( this need to fit on top of 5 gallon pot with out falling in or
being to large as to over hang the top of the pot.)
2 long strips of rubber (tire tube will be fine. one is for an air tight seal
between 5 gallon pot and steal bowl, and the other is
for a seal for garbage bag that will be explained later.)
1- large garbage bag
14- Large bags of ice.(approx. you will need alot!)
1-1 gallon double boiler ( one pot that sits on top of the other, the botton
haveing water in it heating up the top pot.)
6- feet of hemp or cotton rope. ( to coil on the bottom of the 10 gallon
pot.)
Enough isopropyl alcohol 99% to cover and soak your weed in. Just enough to cover your weed, NO more. Your alcohol must be 99%. NO LESS

Our mash was a mixture of all my shake and all the lower buds off of my own plants.

Preparing Your Mash:

Using only well dried weed and shake. Grind it to i fine powder. Place it into a 4 liter ( 1 gallon ) plastic container with a tight fitting lid. Dump 99% alcohol over weed powder( using only enough to cover the top of the weed). Don't use too much as you will have to process off the extra alcohol when seperating it from the oil, later on. Let you mash soak in the alcohol for about a week befor starting the next step.

Line the metal colender with paper towel or large coffee filter. Place in bottom of 5-gallon pot. Pour your alcohol soaked mash carefully, not to splash. The alcohol will drain into the bottom of the 5-gallon pot through the paper towel in the colender. This will filter out all the unwanted particals that are in your solution.

Now take your rubber strip and wrap it around the outer edge and lip of the bowl.Place the bowl on top of the 5-gallon pot like a double boiler.( this will form an air tight seal between the bowl and the top of the 5-gallon pot.)

Take your garbage bag and place it over your 5-gallon pot like a tent. Take your second rubber strip and wrap the strip around the lip of the 5-gallon pot and the garbage bag. Cut a small hole in one corner of the bag. Use the garbage bag as a liner in the metal bowl, useing the hole you cut as a vent hole to release the air.(this creats a water tight seal so as the ice melts you will not have any water in your oil.) Close the hole back up with a bread tag or clothes pin.

Cooking directions:

Here is where it starts to get Dangerous so please use extreme caution when when heating alcohol.

Place crushed ice in the garbage bag lined bowl in the 5-gallon pot. ( Be very carefull not to rip the garbage bag.)

Place the 5-gallon pot into the preheated water in the 10-gallon pot, being sure to center it in the coil of rope. (the purpose of the coil rope is to keep the 5 gallon pot off the direct heat of the electric element heating the wate which is heating the alcolhol in the 5-gallon pot. The hot water ensures an even distribution of heat on the 5-gallon pot.)

Explanation: The alcohol will boil at 185*F. turn to gas. The gas will rise in the 5 gallon pot and meet the bottom of the ice filled bowl. The cold bowl condenses the vapor back to a liquid and drips down the bottom of the bowl into the colender washing the oil out of the mash with the alcohol. Once you have found your temperature you will notice your stove cycle off and on to keep the proper heat. As your stove cycles on you will notice the garbage bag slightly expand apporx 2 inches. If bag expands more than 2 inches open your vent hole that you cut in the corner and vent excess gas. Use extreme caution when venting. Reseal vent with clothes pin. When your stove cycles off again in approx 1-1 1/2 minutes you will notice your garbage bag contract and suck in. As the ice melts scoop out the water and replace with more ice. Again, be very carefull not to tear a hole in the garbage bag. Cook your mash like this for approx 3-4 hours no more.

This is a very volitile solution and should not be over heated more than 185*F. and should only be done in a well ventilated area. NO SMOKEING OR OPEN FLAMES OF ANY KIND AT TIME OF PROCESSING. I CAN NOT EXPRESS THE AMOUNT OF SAFETY YOU SHOULD PRACTICE WHEN USING THIS METHOD.

When cooking is complete:

Turn off stove. Carefully remove ice and water from garbage bag makeing sure not to tear the bag once again. Remove 5-gallon pot from 10-gallon pot. Remove rubber strip from out side of bag and disposive garbage bag. Remove metal bowl from 5-gallon pot. DO NOT PUT HANDS IN 5-GALLON POT! Let stand to cool off for 20-30 min. The alcohol vapors are extremely hot and will peel the skin instantly off your hand. After cooling, remove colender and dispose mash. All that should be in the bottom of the 5-gallon pot is a black thin liquid.

This is the most dangerous Part:

Pour the black alcohol liquid into a small 1-gallon double boiler. put boiler on stove and heat water in bottom to 185*F. Put pot with alcohol into boiler full of water. Slowly heat the alcohol to boiling point. Allow the alcohol to evaporate off. Leaving you with the oil extract that you have been waiting for. The smell and texture will be an indication of when it is finished.

ONCE AGAIN I CAN NOT EXPRESS HOW MUCH SAFETY AND CAUTION YOU MUST US WHEN DOING THIS.

Ok. now you have your finished product. Scrape the oil from the bottom of your pot and pour it into your glass jar. With the amount of mash we used, we got approx 40 grams of preemo oil.

soaking buds in alcohol for any more than 2 minutes max will casue chlorophyls and plant sugars to leech into your product making it a black runny unsmokeable pile of garbage..

you can most certainly use 70% or even 50% ISOPROPYL alcohol, as the extra % is simpley distilled water.

you do NOT need to " Boil" the alcohol.

Do NOT use liquor (grain alcohol) as it contains sugars that get into your hash and caramelize when smoked. ( tho it is okay if using oil for cooking)


and Yo..... NEVER soak buds in alcohol longer than 2 minutes !!!!!!!!!!
or you will get a nasty unsmokeable mess...

well it has been a long time since i posted in here and i must say one thing. Ninja you wouldnt know good oil if you feel in a vat of it cuz if you actually sat down and smoked this stuff, you wouldn't be getting up from the table. that is besides the point tho. things are still growing well and the oil i just made was my best and biggest batch yet! i got about 12 5 gram bottles compared to the usual 7-8 bottles. i lost all my good strain right now so i just popped some old seeds i had gotten from some not bad weeed i had bought on the street. i am 3 weeks in to bud right now and things are going good. maybe i will post again soon, but untill then take care guys and have fun!

that looks like a painfully dangerous way of making oil.

I once saw a diagram years ago to a set up something like what you are talking about there.

I got it form the guy that told me growing in fish guts was how you get bubblegum flavor and that a 1500W merc. vap. was the best light I could get for indoor.

All the green in your oil is plant nastiness, bet it doesn't get too thick.

When I make ISO oil I make it on the stove in the kitchen, double boiler on low and let the alcohol evaporate out.
I use the range hood to suck all the vapor outside.
A foot from my stove you can't smell any ISO.
Unless you are holding an open flame in your hand WHILE making oil, or throwing matches at your jug of ISO, or pressurizing it, you will be perfectly safe. Main thing to remember is use a little alcohol at a time, instead of a gallon or two of it.

Besides, alcohol burns off quick, anytime I have seen it go up in flames it burned itself out pretty fast.

BTW alcohol is flammable, not explosive (unless of course you pressurize it!)

I would like to point out that I am by no means a professional oil maker, and I have not tried this method of extraction. With that in mind I want to warn EVERYONE not to try to make iso oil this way.

It's complicated, it's pressurized, and will make some fairly nasty oil.
There are too many things to go wrong that will cause avoidable damages (to self and extraction).

haha cheese man, I was hanging out with friends the morning after spending a night sleeping on the beach with my girl and some friends. I don't know why, but I was reading a few names on a paper on the fridge and it was two of my friends moms names. Sandy, and Gina.

I have decided that after reading your thread (at length) I will never make hash oil

for one, its completely tampering with a natural plant.. I mean.. why would you need oil.. just smoke good herb or make hash. This method looks very dangerous, and will probably get someone seriously injured.

Id much rather relax and roll up a nice blunt with some good herb than fuck around with boiling alcohol.
