LOL,those are what i use also bro.I bought the dome the first time around but wally world sells the refill packs [just the pellets]in 25 or 72 count packages.I use them to clone, but like you ive got 3 beans germing in there now.Ive started 3 WRxWR last night and i plan to start 3 AK-48 tonight.
Theses jiffies i wouldnt recommend for some hydro setups like NFT and EBB-n-Flo,but they work a mint with DWC and SWC.
For cloning i use a dome, not the one that came with it as it is very short. The included dome is really only good for starting seeds, unless you take really small clones.

Jiffy also makes the same tray with a built-in heat mat. I've seen them around the garden centers and always been curious about how well they'd work.
The tray and 72 Jiffy pellet set has worked great for me for seeds and cuttings. Only thing I have noticed is that they hold a bit too much water. I've been lifting the pellets out of the tray and sitting on a thick pad of newspaper over night to soak out the excess water. It really seems to help things along.
The other I've been doing is adding a bit of Thrive-alive or Liquid Karma to the water when I do my first soak of the pellets. This is something I've just recently started doing so I honestly couldn't give you a positive https://svr52.ehostpros.com/~homegr52/forums/images/icons/icon14.gif

So how do they transplant? I usually start my seeds in peat cups, but transplant them directly out of them into 1 gal pots. I am planting seeds under the full moon tomorrow night, and I am thinking of using one of these 12 packs. Wondering how these go into the larger pots. I could score the sides and bottoms if necessary. Thanks for the help.

Just put them straight into your compost, no need to mess with them as the roots go straight thru the mesh. Been using them for a couple of years now. I buy them online a hundred at a time as they are fairly cheap to buy that way.

Great things and have been using them for ever. I buy mine from the local nursery 1000 for $100. :)

I thought that with the mesh they might break down better than the normal peat pots; I never just planted the peat pots, I took the plants out of the container. But I like the idea of just being able to stick the entire thing in the larger pots, so we will stick some seeds in them tonight.
Damn Smitty, a 1000 at a time, I hope I could grow 1000 plants in my lifetime!!

Hey CB, on Monday I saw the same thing at Lowe's and I bought 5 trays at $7 a tray. 72 for $7-8 is a good deal in my book. :D
I've never used these pellets for germing but I do use them for clones. I had a little trouble this last time because I kept them too wet and too humid (with the dome) for too long. The batch of 5 I just got transplanted rooted in about 7 days. I too just plop the pellet and all into into my pots once the roots poke out of the mesh. :gthumb:
peakguy... if you are usiny peat pot's and not these jiffy-7 pellets then yes the best thing is to remove from the pot before transplant or at least slit the side's
which do you have bro?
drumin... cant beleive they still had some in stock ;) moisture control is the key with these and I copy LL and use a tray of perlite to sit them in. I have never used a dome with them, yet

CB I usually have been using the pots. But I saw one of those kits, so I picked it up to try. Once they are wet, I can see that the pellets should just disolve into the next potting soil when transplanted. I use to use the peat pots, but never trusted them to rot off leaving the roots free to roam, so I always transplanted the seedlings out of the pots. These pellets I will just sit in the next pot when ready - I stuck the seeds in them last night. Didn't know about the perlite though, so will add throw some of that in the tray. Thanks for the tips guys.
cool bro.... was confused on just what you had this time
the jiffy-7 can be planted up no problem thats for sure.... few day's you will see roots poke'n out :D
moisture control is a must with them and to much is a bad thing... kinda want that dry look to them..
peace and good luck

I'm sold. Very easy to use and, as you can see, 12 of 12 germed. Had one little stragler that needed help getting out of the seed, but all the gurlz look good.

They are only just over an inch tall, maybe some closing in on 2, but not too bad. I will lower the lamp a bit today as I am taking the heating pad away. These are not as leggy as the seedlings I use to get in the full peat cups. When I transplant, maybe this weekend, I will bury them a bit deeper. They were only 6 days old when the pics were taken.
I did not put any perlite in the tray, once the seedlings stood up, I took the dome off and with the heating pad under them, the moisture level was not a problem. I am sold on these babys, and on the weekend will be back to Lowe's to get a bag of replacements. The little 12 unit tray is the perfect size for me as I don't usually start more seeds than that at a time. Thanks for the tip everyone, that's why I love it here!

Yep I've been using Jiffy 7 pucks for some time. Clones and beans. I get them wet one time real good then they are good till you see roots. Around 5 to 8 days. Never use a dome just the tray or a plate on a heating pad on low with a thick towel between the pad and the tray so they don't dry out too fast. Then just pop them in a pot when I see roots.. Works great:D .

dawg, you must have some lasting juice because i cannot let my pellets go for more than a day without rehydrating. maybe it is because i use a different heat. i use heat from above>>40W fluorescent tubes.
it's true that they aren't hard to keep moist; I just keep a little water in the tray for a few hours every day and that is one reason I like the pellets for mass plantings because otherwise I would have to cover the soil to keep it moist and covering takes time/plastic.
The biggest benefit I found about using these pellets is that they are small. Smallness means many more seedlings can fit under the lights; wide pots take up room. So for mass plantings, pellets are the way to go, much better than trying to remove an individual plug from those plastic trays that are like egg cartons almost. The pellets also grow better plants than the plug trays do. but the pellets do not grow bigger seedlings the gallon pots. gallon pots or larger will let a plant grow it's first leaves a lOT larger. so I do not use the pellets unless I need the light space.

By wet real good I mean I drop them in their container (for me a tray) fill the tray with water. They drink up all the water till very wet then I add about 1 inch of water in the bottom. Clones will need water at least once more. That usualy will hold them till they are rooted. Easy to water that way. Heat is low and I keep my lights up high till I see green. Great Product!

Meant to do this some time ago, but . . .
Here is how some of the transplants look in their new, bigger pots. They were not so leggy as appeared in the earlier photo. So far the only drawback I find w/ the pellets is having to transplant up within a week. Not that big a deal for me.

I was going to try and go into this lightly, but when I got to lowes, it was 72pucks for 6 bucks, or a starter greenhouse tray with 12 pucks for 4-5. I went with the 72 pack :D .
I've actually got one in a cup of water now, gonna sprout some cucumber in my window at work, lol.
Tonight tho, its clean up and transplant time. any cut clones will try out the jiffys. I'll let ya know how they work for me, as a first timer with them. (speaking of which, any additional advice yall can spill this way on proper use?)

I found peat pellets as successful as aero cloning if squeezed out after re-hydration and before inserting the clone.
Capillary matting in a heated dome never failed for me and I only need watch for drying out once opening the dome vents after 4-6 days.
I've also used them for planting up into 4 & 3 inch rockwool cubes for both NFT and F&D with great effect. I'm pretty certain what nutrients are present in the small pellet aid roots in surfacing the the rockwool in super quick time. :2cents:
Jiffies. Top product for all growers IMHO.

Thanks Claw. I started 4 Better Boy, 3 cucumber and 3 sweet pea seeds in some last night. I cant do a nice garden where I am, thanks land lord for changin my lease, but theres not a thing that says I cannot do a container garden, or as Im calling it, my Pot Garden. By the time I get some movement out of those seeds, it'll be clonin time.

Friday night, 2 cucumbers were up, 2 pea plants and 1 tomato. Yesterday another cucumber made it thru and the other 3 tomato plants did as well.
Had a problem on 2 of the cuc's though. When the stem came up, it was right against the mesh that wraps the puc. At that exact point the stem looked like a tiny bite had been taken, but it wasnt, just damping off... dammit.. good to learn this on veggies tho. I may loose a tomato also from it but the other plants look good.
They're all going in pots and soil tonight.
On the 15th I took my first cutting to root in the jiffy's. man do they dry up quick. I have it sitting on a small dish with a light layer of perlite and water now, it was just in there.
I'll keep ya updated on the clone trial too. If she roots, 5-6 more will be taken and trialled again.

Hey Shadows. Good luck with the pellets.
You said "Man do they dy up quick". I couldn't agree with you more. Pellets, in my personal opinion, are good for a grower who can keep a watchful eye on his plants, and is able to tend to them while they need it. I'm more of a *When I have the time* gardener, and I found the pellets to be very unforgiving. I just go with a cup of dirt now.
peakguy
03-19-2007, 04:40 PM
Roger that Gorilla. You can use the little cover that comes with the kit to keep moisture in, and if I was using them for clones I would mos def do that. For seeds, I keep the top on until they break ground. But I had to replant the seeds in the pellets after just one week, and I think most of us keep a pretty close eye on our gurlz during that first week. But ain't nothing wrong with a cup o' dirt either, that was my old method, and it reduces the pressure to replant before the roots get dried out.

Well, dunno what it is but Im having a fit of a time with them. Lost another cucumber and have 3 tomato sprouts just barely hanging in there. Had a 22w cfl sitting around so I bent a clothes hanger into a stand and have that over the sprouts. Got 7 pots cleaned up lastnight, looks like I may only need 2-3 of them at this time tho, dammit. Well, the next seeds I start will be in soil.
Even the clone is having a time. She was dry and wilty again lastnight. Took the perlite out of the plate and filled it with water. Lets see how she looks tonight.
