CBP Officers in South Carolina Discover More Than 2,800 Pounds of Marijuana Concealed in a Container

(Thursday, June 19, 2008)

Charleston, S.C. – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Charleston, S.C., port of entry seized 2,807 pounds of marijuana, with a street value of approximately $2,245,600, concealed in a container shipment.

CBP officers in Charleston, S.C., discover 404 bundles of marijuana with an approximate street value of more then $2.2 million.

On May 28 , CBP officers, using non-intrusive inspection technology to perform an initial inspection of the shipment, discovered anomalies in a container. A more intensive physical examination of the container revealed 404 concealed packages of a green leafy substance. The substance field-tested positive for marijuana. The shipment is currently under investigation by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“CBP uses a layered border security strategy that combines automation and technologies with the expertise and dedication of our frontline officers,” said Mike Denning, CBP’s acting director of field operations for the Atlanta Field Office. “Through these efforts, we are able to meet the dual objectives of maintaining secure borders, while promoting the efficient movement of legitimate goods and travelers.”

CBP is securing U.S. ports of entry by utilizing state-of-the-art detection technology. Large-scale Gamma-ray/X-ray Imaging Systems are deployed at ports of entry. These systems produce transmission and reflected images of the contents of a cargo container, rail car, vehicle or semi-trailer truck. CBP officers analyze these images to determine where there are anomalies within the shipment, which are inconsistent with the cargo listed on the manifest.
