Josh Howard scored 18 points in the NBA Playoffs Game 3 win on Friday night, but was only 5-of-16 shooting. There was a ton of media at the game after Howard had admitted on a local radio show that he used marijuana in the NBA offseason. Howard said, "I never meant to hurt nobody's feelings. It's over with now. I'm trying to talk about basketball." He also said that a lot of NBA players smoke during the offseason. You should have kept all that confidential, Howard. David Stern is now your new best friend and don't be surprised that you get tested more than usual. Howard made a bad decision in disclosing his marijuana use during NBA offseason, this puts a bullseye on his back. The oddsmakers at sportsbook.com currently have the Dallas -5 Favorties to New Orelans into this NBA Playoffs betting matchup.
Pot smoked offseason does not affect his ability to play basketball though. As long as Howard stays in shape and plays up to his ability, there is no reason to be concerned. If he chooses to smoke weed in the offseason, that is really his option. He is still a dominant player in the league and obviously his play has not been affected. I would love to have him on my team and I do not think he should be subjected to punishment internally or by the league. I don't see how anyone can be upset with Howard for talking about his smoking habits. Any casual NBA fan knows that hundreds of players like to get high, they just don't come clean about it. Since when does a guy get disciplined for being truthful? Obviously he shouldn't be smoking weed but at least he's honest. Howard is a bigger man than a lot of the other liars in the league.
The thing I don't understand about Friday night's game is that all they could talk about was Howards pot use. They said they were just going to mention it once and then get on with the game. That is not what happened. They talked about it every 5 minutes. Can someone tell me why they had to talk about it throughout two different games? It is a gossip story and doesn't need to be discussed by telecasters during the whole game. When you watch replays of old games, you never hear the announcers talking about the silly off the court stuff of the time. Besides, it just something he said, he wasn't busted or arrested, he just spoke about something. ESPN stinks and should be very careful about biting the hand that feeds them, with all their athlete bashing. Let's not forget, our last two presidents admitted to smoking marijuana at around the same age as Howard, and he is a professional athlete, not someone making decisions that affect the whole world.
