Help my baby's are being savaged by a hoard of slugs...or so it seems. my 3 week oldens have got byte marks and one has been reduced to a stalk...
i have put a little plastic palisade around the stalks... have you got any other ideas regarding them. i have thought of beer traps but don^t think that they would be effective in a small pot...
I am against any chemical solution because i will consume my produce and not have to worry about chemicals...

Marrigolds.
if I'm remembering correctly, slugs want nothing to do with marrigolds.
simply plant that easy annual around whatever you want to protect like a hedge and you will be golden.
or was that snails that Marrigolds repel???:blah:
Edit: ok... I'm a tool... that's been established... just ignore me from now on....

Go to the super market and get a six pack of Guinness and leave a flat dish of the stout out for them every night they just love that when they drink it they will; explode and its nice and organic.

whoa,im gonna go try that just fr the hell of it :D
HERVIL: Companion to radishes for improved growth and flavor. Keeps aphids off lettuce. Said to deter slugs. Likes shade.
COMFREY: Accumulates calcium, phosphorous and potassium. Likes wet spots to grow in. Traditional medicinal plant. Good trap crop for slugs
KELP: When used in a powder mixture or tea as a spray, this versatile sea herb will not only repel insects but feed the vegetables. In particular we have observed that kelp foliar sprays keep aphids and Japanese beetles away when used as a spray every 8 days before and during infestation times. If you have access to seaweed, use it as a mulch to keep slugs away.
MARIGOLDS: (Calendula): Given a lot of credit as a pest deterrent. Keeps soil free of bad nematodes; supposed to discourage many insects. Plant freely throughout the garden. The marigolds you choose must be a scented variety for them to work. One down side is that marigolds do attract spider mites and slugs.
RUE: Deters aphids, fish moths, flea beetle, onion maggot, slugs, snails, flies and Japanese beetles
WORMWOOD: Keeps animals out of the garden when planted as a border. An excellent deterrent to most insects. A tea made from wormwood will repel cabbage moths, slugs, snails, black flea beetles and fleas effectively.

DE
Diatomaceous Earth
is made up of the silicate shells of microscopic sea creatures called diatoms. With it's microscopic razor sharp edges, diatomaceous earth when spread in your garden or field physically kills and deters slugs without the use of harmful poisons.
It can be dusted or sprayed as a control for most leaf eating insects and is used to deter slugs and snails.
Natural DE makes a very effective natural insecticide. The insecticidal quality of DE is due to the razor sharp edges of the diatom remains. When DE comes in contact with the insects, the sharp edges lacerate the bugs' waxy exoskeleton and then the powdery DE absorbs the body fluids causing death from dehydration. Said more simply, DE kills insects by drying then up.
"FYI": Diatomaceous Earth sold for swimming pool filters is dangerous to human health, your pets and Livestock. It has been chemically treated and heated to change it's composition.
beer is great in or out of the can
salt but it spoils the soil so gotta have sumpin between it and the soil

Here is a bit of organic info
ORGANIC BAITS -- Iron phosphate is the key ingredient in organic slug and snail baits. This ingredient is encapsulated in a material that slugs find irresistible. When the slug eats the bait, it gets a bellyache and wanders off to die. Iron phosphate combined with spinosad is very effective in killing earwigs and sowbugs. This bait is best applied two to three weeks before setting out transplants.

We used to grow a lot of flowers and marigolds were one of the first to be hit by slugs. Maybe a particular strain of marigold will help but of 3 we grew they loved them!
But.... broken egg shells are average and organic.
Ash.
A copper wire ring around the stem base OR..... what I used to do with prize plants was use sanding discs, the ones with a hole in the middle. Cut a slit into the centre hole and slip it around the base of the stem with the grit side up. Don't use glass paper, it has to be mineral :2cents:
I think I've used beer raps before but I'm not sure if I got there before the slugs :confused

Hot peppers!!! Them barstewards would get all I can throw at em if they went near my peppers!
The only way they can get up the stem past a sanding disc is on young plants when the stem is too small for the hole.
I'm not sure how true it is and I can't be bothered to google it up, but I was told many moons ago by an old timer that slugs take up moisture from the ground they pass over to replace the moisture spent in slime legs. It kinda made sense seeing how they're mostly active whilst dew is on the ground or when wet
Let me know how it goes CB.
EDIT>>> Added picture. No1s are what I get most of and orange ones also as big. Bastards.

The goo Bex. I also feel a little bad at killing them directly watching them squirm. I've stopped using salt cause I get a guilt trip and end up giving them a fresh water rescue soaking then throwing them towards my neighbours veggie patch :(
The sanding discs just deter them. They go away. I've sometimes found goo where they went to far across before taking on-board what they're crossing, but never a dead one and never an eaten plant.
Oh, and no goo ;)

ok fine deter them then..
when there babys hatch and you got 4000 babys crawling thur the center on the disk coming for the top of your plant you will think to leave just a wee bit of beer in the bottom of that tin..you toss the tin/can in the bin/trash can when its filling up with a mass of gooey-ness.
I never drink the end of a beer in a tin ...i think of goo. ewww
and drink the waste beer on the way home.. AGAIN EWWW..
(You havent you seen most waste lines that come from the drain under the tap..Thanks uncle joe (not real name) who does that for a living, cleans taps and drains for bars..
men there so soft..
all goo-y and stuff..
and Thanks for quoting me so much.. makes me feel so loved!
