this is my first real atempt at a hyro setup (bubble bucket method) i built a box 2'X2'X4' and i am running cfls at about 5000 lumens/f2
but unfortunately im using bag seed and i can even rember what the bud was like i got it from (short term memory is great) but here is my problem all plants are the same age (except one in the back, the taller one) but 2 of them seem to be getting bigger alot faster then the rest could this b a sign of sex or just conditions
if any one has and advice id b in youy debt
(i plann on posting the whole grow satart to finnish enjoy)
ill add more pics as i find em /resize em

Some opinions and research have found that males grow taller then females in vegetative state..... as well as flower....
But I have found no real method to this.... only real way to tell a male from a female is when the plants actually show sex which is 7 to 14 days into the flower cycle.
One cause for tall growth is lighting..... how close the light is to the plants, what type of light it is.
Humidity can also play a factor, high humidity can cause the plant to spread out so that it has better air circulation to avoid mold and disease.
etc,etc....
Looking forward to see your grow progress.

it could also be the fact that different things grow at different rates, too.

all plants grow at different rates all depends on the strains good luck with the grow if you want to determine the sex take a clone off the plant and put it in 12/12 light in a cup of watter good luck will be looking forward to seeing some pics soon peace

Bag seed/landrace strains tend to grow taller anyways because they have never been subject to selection for height as they grow outside, if you gonna grow landrace better to flower em @ about 9"-10" so you will have room for expansion and get ready for a long flowering schedule.
By the way welcome to HGB:pass:

i wouldnt say your unfortunately your growing bagseed some of the best plants ive grown have been bagseed and my buddy just pulled one down from bagseed that was 2ft. tall toped to 4 main colas and ended up with 5 1/4oz. dry from it and it was killer smoke;) you will get lots of variation between them but its good to find that killer fem to make a mother and clone the hell out of her

sounds like time to flower with 2.5 feet of height left, and the 2.5g will do just fine trust me:) root bound will help control upward growth if need be
figure on the plants grow'n 2/3's the size in flower:D

but im worried about having root room
from the looks of it you using a net pot cover for a 5-gallon bucket the roots will have plenty of room. if that is what your using they will grow threw the net into the bucket :)
The most important tool you have in your "tool box" is free, difficult to use, often overlooked. It is called the "p" tool, use it well. BTW good luck
Beware the "too disease" it has taken the life of more plants than can be numbered

maybe one is growing smaller because there is more than one plant in that one bucket? Maybe it's growing smaller because it's genetically predisposed to? Maybe it's a pussy plant. :D But I wouldn't kill it until I know it's male or female.
Best of luck, you have been given some good advice in this thread. Best of all, your plants are very green!!! Keep us updated on how they progress.
:sunny:maybe one is growing smaller because there is more than one plant in that one bucket? Maybe it's growing smaller because it's genetically predisposed to? Maybe it's a pussy plant. :D But I wouldn't kill it until I know it's male or female.
what the Simian said:D
I have found one plant per container works best.:)
Different strains grow at different rates. At the extreems I have found blueberry grows very low & slow. Durban poisin grew "like a weed", in seven weeks it actually grew past a lamp set at 8 feet from the floor bulb. I had to break her poor little neck:eek:
could be a dud... prob not:(
btw if you have the facilities;
before you sex them clone them ... and mark them, :slap:
If you have females, there you are, she can go ahead and crop out. no reversing the cycle to clone. You already have her clone so sexing will never be an issue again... for that pheno of that strain:p
If there is a male (curse it)... no harm done just toss the clone on the hash pile;) Unless you want to become a seed bank, kill your males. Just a speck of pollen can really (pun intended) fuck up a grow.
Edit:
:chick:It is good karma to refer to your plants as females

so........... one week later and i have learnt a thing or two.....with so many plants in a small system i am going to have to keep a better eye on my nute levels and ph because i devloped some chlorosis and spotty necrosis on some older growth....no big deal i fawn over the ladies enough to have cought it early...................and a 55w cfl bulb will raise my temp and lower my humidity considerably so i added a fan to my venting as well as the intake fan..........i sat a back and shared a fatty with the ladies and we decided not to crop out any one but i will train/bend them over towards the edges of the box just to give me a lil more flowering room im not to sure how big there going get but i have already experimented with outher seeds from the same bag as these (i got a really seedy batch this winter)and they respond well to traning..so i think after bending them over and veging for another week ish (to reduce stress ect) im going to start 12/12 and watch the magic happen :)
i will post pics as soon as it is posible. good luck to all working on the problem!! ( i wish there was somthing i could do about the error but me and electronics dont get along so well ...lol) i welcome all your questions and comments pls..................thats how we learn..................................
p.s. its great to b able to talk ,share and ask questions openly with outher growers insted of keeping my excitement to my self you guys (and gals) at HGB rock tks

here are the pics that go with my last post enjoy
the last one is some of the chlorosis and spotty necrosis i am seeing it has shown up in all my ladies now in the lower (older) growth
i dont think it is a light problem......im leaning more towards a N deff but i check and re check my nute mixtures and keep my ph@6
im using a guick grow brand of nutes
1-2-5pt#1@5ml/
2-0-0pt#2@6ml/l

LOW AND BEHOLD THEY ARE FEMALE...................ALL OF THEM
these are the best pics my cheap 6.3mp camera could get but here they are i was down switching nutes and trimming (figuerd that necrosis i had goin on wasz fungi so i removed it all) i found these babbys i have they same thing showing up on 3 out of 4 plants (the lil guy ant showin ) bag seed did me good i guess and thanks to ghb sexing was easy im so excited:beat: i had a large vape session with the ladies to celebrate :pass: ...........................................
day one of 12/12 and counting wish me luck:watch:
nice one on the lady's :D
(figuerd that necrosis i had goin on wasz fungi so i removed it all)
pretty sure that wasn't fungi... looks more like just lower/bottom leaf die'n off (which is normal) or a bit of nute's got on those as the rest of the plant looked great to me....
damn fine job so far for a first grow and in hydro at that :D

I have to agree a lil..whats your humidty and your air flow...I see this when plants don't have enough airflow or too high of humidity. in my past grows made it look like lettuce and droopy. But they look really green and healthy...but does have some droop.
but they look great!!!! They are growin nicely...(all of us don't have "perfect" plants) they all have there own quircks ;) but better to monitor things ;)
watch your Mg levels could be locking out that is causing the curl.

... do you see the way the leaves seem thick and curved down a little?
Could also be something as simple as low temps.
Can you see the root zone and check its all snow white, or as near as?

You gotta watch them brown roots steve. Brown roots are often followed by brown sludge so you oughta keep an eye on them.
Have a look at additives for decomposing dead root matter harmlessly. I use Regen-a-root (http://www.canadianxpress.com/regen.html) which works wonders as soon as I see any tinge of dead root matter :)
steve oh
05-26-2008, 08:14 PM
thats a good idea burns ill give it a try (couldent hurt) ill post before and aft root pics when i get a chance
Mr Burns
05-27-2008, 09:02 AM
Nice move steve. I never used to used additives for the good of the plant but normally for yield, yield and yield :p It took me a few knock backs to understand to get a basic yield a grower needs a plant in tip top condition, and then a grower can play with additives for yield.
I'm no guru steve but if money is tight I'd rather spend on health additives than yield boosters :2cents:
Give something a go such as the regen-a-root and if it works well for you and your system then you're one step further towards being dialled in :gthumb: but don't go adding boosters this time round unless you can't help yourself :p How about giving this run a go without boosters  Just see how white you can keep them roots and how green you can keep them leaves.
Good stuff steve.

i can smoke and build to my hearts content im excited already ......i think i have some pvc downstairs....and an air pump...some .................................................. ........
Mr Burns
06-05-2008, 04:49 PM
Steve go easy on handling the sweet leaf cause it'll be a good smoke seeing how frosty it is.
I was at a music festival a few years back and gave a friend some of my bud so it appeared I had none and he was 'the man'. An old acquaintance seen it and said "shit man that's more leaf than bud, I can get you better shit than that". Needless to say he was passed out for two sets of bands whilst we kicked back and enjoyed
As for the hydro bug, I remember getting it myself after my first true wet grow. Had I not access to on-line forums to share knowledge or in my case at the time 'glean information' I doubt I'd have been anywhere near as successful, but it was and have never looked back :)
What I will say though is you still can't disregard dirt in some respects. Lets not argue over them but each method be it soil or wet systems produce differing tastes and yields. I'm full wet but always have outdoor grows (unknown to most) and both the end product and time consumption are worlds apart.
Good to see another wet user and loving it. Could I persuade you into NFT :D
Great result Steve. Even better to hear you have 'the bug'.....

yup bin biten hard .....and infected......i have always been a soil man myself
but after a few classes this year i got real intrested in hydro and decided to give it a go ....im trying to plan a workable system to split up my out door garden (vegtables) do halph hydro and halph soil and compare taste and size if all goes well ill post pics (but im still deciding on a system ) and $$ is tight round the oh house so we will c
real excited bout growing hydro though its become a new hobby lately........... i have brought at least 2 buddies over to the wet side and the bug is spreding.............................look out might get YOU
