selecting males

i am going to make some homemade crosses with some strains i have going, but i dont know how to choose a male. i would like your guys' input on the matter. how do you choose a male to breed with? are there particular traits you look for?

also, if you are crossing sativa dom. with indica dom. which do you choose as your male? i am wondering this deeply because i read the post here about DJ shorts technique and he said he uses indica male/sat. female but i would like to know how you guys do it.

Well, I have only done one successful cross. but read a lot.
1. Vitality (over all health)
2. Late flowering male
3. Vigor
are the first three things that I look for first.
Sure CB and others have a ton more pointers, just thought i'd throw my two bits out there.

Read some try a "smoke test" of the male...not to look for high, but for flavor. but haven't tried that myself.

late flowering male? what do you mean? like, it shows preflowers late?

also, what was the successful cross you made, and what do you think made that cross successful?

meant after 12/12 it took a while to show...ussually they show faster for me than females...but had a blue mystic show late. An old school "mentor" of mine sorta been feeding me info for a while....he swears by the late flowering males. The mentor had tons of experience crossing so I took his word for it.

What made it successful is I did not wait to pollenate a branch. I just used it immediatly. Took a paint brush...brushed it on a lower branch when the pollen bagan to drop. No pollen storage.
I crossed an NL fem with Blue mystic Male for fun. Got about 7 seeds off a lower branch. Grew one. Not full out had a few "issues" back when I did it and could not complete the grow. Still got the seeds somewhere.
Using up some other strains I got.

The cross was more to see if I could do it. Was not super careful with selection. tried storing some of the pollen to see if I could do that as well...didn't quite work out for me like it does others.

best look'n over all late flowering male is what I use after the first cross
