Smoking marijuana damages lungs' airways, study finds

London - Smoking one cannabis joint is as harmful to a person’s lungs as having up to five cigarettes, according to research published on Tuesday.

Those who smoked cannabis damaged both the lungs’ small fine airways, used for transporting oxygen, and the large airways, which blocked air flow, the researchers said.

It meant cannabis smokers complained of wheezing, coughing, and chest tightness, the study by experts at the Medical Research Institute of New Zealand found.

The researchers tested 339 people — those who smoked only cannabis, those who smoked tobacco, those who smoked both and non-smokers.

The study found only those who smoked tobacco suffered from the crippling lung disease emphysema, but cannabis use stopped the lungs working properly.

“The extent of this damage was directly related to the number of joints smoked, with higher consumption linked to greater incapacity,” said the authors of the report published in the medical journal Thorax.

“The effect on the lungs of each joint was equivalent to smoking between 2.5 and five cigarettes in one go.”

The British government is considering whether cannabis should be reclassified as a more serious drug because of the dangers associated with stronger strains.

“The danger cannabis poses to respiratory health is consistently being overlooked,” said Helena Shovelton, Chief Executive of the British Lung Foundation.

“Smoking a joint is more harmful to the lungs than smoking a cigarette and we have just banned people from doing that in public places because of the health risks.”

Last week British researchers said using marijuana increased the risk of developing a psychotic illness such as schizophrenia.

Well when I smoke 20 joints a day.....then do a comparison if I can get motivated enough (doubtful) to let em test me. :p

Is it me or are they comparing something illegal to something legal to justify its current illegal status. OK lets compare marijuana to caffeine while were at it. Oh and alcohol :p

Last week British researchers said using marijuana increased the risk of developing a psychotic illness such as schizophrenia.actually, they said they had an idea, but they couldn't prove it. it seems a lot of media outlets kind of forgot to include this portion of the story.

"The researchers said they couldn't prove that marijuana use itself increases the risk of psychosis, a category of several disorders with schizophrenia being the most commonly known."

how convenient huh?

339 people is not nearly enough people for any accurate result and when you consider that out of those 339 people they had 4 control groups it's even worse. That's only about 85 people in each group.

Like the artical mentioned.....
"The British government is considering whether cannabis should be reclassified as a more serious drug because of the dangers associated with stronger strains."

That is the true story here...... nothing else.

[/quote]actually, they said they had an idea, but they couldn't prove it. it seems a lot of media outlets kind of forgot to include this portion of the story.

"The researchers said they couldn't prove that marijuana use itself increases the risk of psychosis, a category of several disorders with schizophrenia being the most commonly known."

Sure these certain snuz agencies "Forgot to mention" that part wakka..... I'll wager if you traced back who published that artical you'll find out a lil more.... like golf buddies with the 'New UK Government' perhaps?
Propaganda is what this artical is...... I mean why else would they leave out a tid bit like that? "said they couldn't prove"

They've been on about schizophrenia, did I copy that right????... what a word!!....... anyway..... they've been on about that fer a while now..... but their studies are weak as drumin has pointed out.

It's jus kills me that people eat this propaganda up with a large soup spoon, Bulls Tail Soup no less..... Oopps different thread again.... damn it!.......
Anyway people eat this shit up and have the gaul to ask for seconds then complain the next day to their friends that the soup tasted like it was seasoned with shit.
Do they wash the tail first sombro? LOL

What I'm saying is...... you need to always look at things from differnt angles, read other real news angency reports to compare.... look at both side of the issue as well.....
Funny thing is... people will take articals they've skimmed over while reading the nightly nuwz and then pass along those vague memories the next day to their work chums..... and then those IDIOTS take it as gospel..... and the vote is next month.... so vote NO......

but you ask???? vote NO for what?? which is NO..... and which is YES......
you havent even been given the question yet..... gezzzsh!

See what I mean?

:halol:

Yeah yeah..... rambles on.....

it really depends on what ya feed your babies....

"The rock mineral apatite, which US farmers are by law obliged to use in the form of phosphate fertilizer, contains radon. One of the resulting products of radon decay is polonium-210, a radioactive substance which ends up on the fine hairs of the tobacco plant and is subsequently inhaled by smokers. Not naturally occurring in tobacco, but it is a deliberately added by-product of the phosphate mining industry.

Any of the many substances found in cigarette smoke can be shown to cause poor health and lead to disease, but laboratory trials consistently and repeatedly demonstrate that the only component that causes lung cancer tumours is polonium-210. The tobacco industry has been fully aware since the 1960's that cigarettes contain significant levels of polonium-210.

Prior to 1930 and the advent of chemical fertilizers lung cancer was virtually unknown whereas today the incidence is greater than that for heart disease. Between 1938 and 1960, the level of polonium-210 in US grown tobacco tripled as the use of chemical fertilizers increased. The US Surgeon General, C Everett Koop is on record in 1990 stating publicly that tobacco radiation is probably responsible for 90% of tobacco-related cancer.

The Surgeon General C. Everett Koop stated that radioactivity, rather than tar, accounts for at least 90% of all smoking-related lung cancers. The Center for Disease Control concluded "Americans are exposed to far more radiation from tobacco smoke than from any other source."

Cigarette smoking accounts for 30% of all cancer deaths. Only poor diet rivals tobacco smoke as a cause of cancer in the U.S., causing a comparable number of fatalities each year. However, the National Cancer Institute, with an annual budget of $500 million, has no active funding for research of radiation from smoking or residential radon as a cause of lung cancer, presumably, to protect the public from undue fears of radiation."

besides that, i don't know if mj stores the 210 the same way tobacco does.
in any event, mj may contain more tar, but it's accepted that it's the polonium that causes the cancer.
the disinformation/misdirection tactics that they use are deplorable. and under the guise of medical science.

bastards, all of 'em.

Not to mention that tobacco was far less addictive before WWII. There have been so many chemicals added to commercial tobacco designed to make it more addictive. Ammonia being the biggest culprit. Ammonia is added to cause the nicotine to be absorbed much faster, thereby making you want more sooner. It's the same theory behind crack cocaine, commercial cigs have been turned into "crack cigs". If you really want to smoke tobacco, grow your own. :D
