as long as you can intake some fresh air from somewhere outside it wont be a problem. if your still having humidity problems then invest in a dehumidifier.
you could even build a self containing box down there with a nice ventilation system and setup a sweet grow room. how big is your basement?

the main cause of mold in buds is to high humidity or stale air.

Depending on your set up, if you dug a hole and create a grow area with new potting soil, you could actually do well, but I wouldn't plant in the soil that is there now. But if your drainage is good, it could give you a couple of feet of extra headroom by planting at ground level. As posted above, your air circulation will be important and you will have to watch for bugs. Good luck.

cheers swissmjthe basment is about 30ft by 20 ft give or take but the hight is only 6 feet high. this guy i work wit wants to sell my four 200 watt hids for a $100 bucks is that a good deal its the whole set up fixtures and bulbs? i was gonna do the plants in five gallon buckets but the idea of diging up a area and putting good soil sounds good cause then i can dig down more to make my hight higher thanx for the feed back everyone peace

I would just dig a hole and put some pots in there with soil in them rather than try to plant directly in the ground. that way when you go to flush the plants you won't flood the place.

for that hundred bucks you could buy 1 400w lamp with a hood and have a lot better luck. those little 200 watt lamps do not have much penetration and are better suited toward closet/cabinet grows.

hey everyone just wanted to say thanx for all the feed back. so i been thinking (can u see the smoke lol) im gonna close in a ten by ten area the hight of the room is six feet there is a small window in there that is boarded iam gonna use that for a fresh air intake. now i was thinking of useing the cimney for the out take will that be fine? or will carbon monoxide leek into the grow room? as for lights havent really decided on what i want to use the cheaper the better but i will spend enough to have the right lighting for that size room. i just dont know how to figure that out yet lol. so im going to take some pics soon and post them up . thanx again for the great feed back. peace

just get you a big extraction fan and a couple of swing fans and you should be ok unless your foundation leaks like a siv and your dirt floor turn to mud every time it rains but on the plus side basements seem to me to be easier to control the temp and humidaty evan during the hottest parts of the year damn i miss my old house with the huge basement

1k hid will do 5x5 foot and 2 will cover 10x10

my room grows and shrinks with the seasons and the max flower size is 10x10 and when that size i use 3k of hps

if you have side light then room size can be a bit bigger

right now my room is 5x5 with 1500 watts of hps :)
