This is my trailer park tutorial about how to make BHO.

I took lots of pictures, hope you like em.
Also, at the end of this I included all the weights of material used and produced.

If you have questions, or something to add or point out, consider yourself invited.

Here's a list of things I used. I'll get into more detail about some of them as I use them.

3 cans of near zero impurities butane
home made extractor
2 pyrex casserole dishes, pie plates will do as long as they are glass and one fits into the other.
metal pin.
razor blade
coffee filter
21 grams of weed
gloves
small jar for the oil
tea cup, you'll see
something to smoke the oil the oil with once it's done!

Lets start with the Butane. There are many brands to choose from but the ones you want say “Triple Refined” or “near zero impurities” somewhere on the can. Places I have bought them before include corner stores, tobacco shops, hardware stores, the hydro shop and the headshop usually carry them too.

http://www.homegrownbud.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=9506&stc=1&d=1173265553

I started with 22.4 grams of small buds and 'bottom of the bag' from some commercial stuff.
It was real dry, but not as crispy dry as I would have liked. I picked some stalks out of it and ground it to powder in my bud buster. It weighed 21.8 after grinding.

http://www.homegrownbud.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=9507&stc=1&d=1173265553

This is the extractor I made. It's 3 pieces of ABS glued to a 5 inch piece of 1.5” ABS pipe.
1 end cap, 1 drain plug and 1 collar, to attach th plug to the pipe.
In the end cap I drilled a small hole all the way through, and a slightly bigger hole about 1/3rd of the way through. On the other end I drilled 5 holes to allow for the butane to escape. I use a single thickness of coffee filter over the plug on the end to filter the bits out, that same filter has been used 4 or 5 times now!

http://www.homegrownbud.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=9508&stc=1&d=1173265553

I have fit an ounce in this before, but this time we will go with 21 grams. Filled the extractor about ¾ of the way.

http://www.homegrownbud.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=9509&stc=1&d=1173265553

I use two pyrex casserole dishes with one being larger than the other. This is so after I am done blasting butane through the weed I can dump a pot of boiling water in the lower dish.

http://www.homegrownbud.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=9510&stc=1&d=1173265553

ALL BUTANE EXTRACTION MUST BE DONE OUTSIDE ** NO EXCEPTION.
This is safe to do, as long as you do it OUTSIDE. Your stove vent will not be enough. Being in a vented room or open garage door will not be enough. BE OUTSIDE.
NO SMOKING, NO FLAME, SPARK, HEAT GUNS, ELECTRIC MOTORS, FANS OR HIGH TEMPERATURE LIGHTS!!

If you follow these very simple rules, You will be very safe.

Today it's COLD out, about -17C or 1.4F!!
It was snowing very gently while I was doing this, so I made a trailer park grade makeshift cover to keep the snow out of my dish.

http://www.homegrownbud.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=9514&stc=1&d=1173265553

Before this next step you want to make very sure that your gloves, sleeves, smaller pyrex dish, extractor and cans of butane are clean and dry, free of water droplets, dirt or tiny little bits of weed dust, because they WILL end up in your oil. A roll of paper towels can be your best friend, next to the oil.
The butane comes with a ring full of tips but I find the one attached to the can works perfect.
I press the can down and hold it until it completely stops hissing. I wanted to get as much out of it as I could, so I ran three cans of butane through it.

http://www.homegrownbud.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=9511&stc=1&d=1173265553

Here's a nice close up of the THC laden butane dripping out the bottom.

http://www.homegrownbud.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=9512&stc=1&d=1173265553

After my three cans are empty I CAREFULLY pour a pot of boiling water into the larger pyrex dish on the bottom. You do not want to get any water on the oil.

Once the heat from the water starts to get through the glass you will see the butane start to boil. Once it starts to boil it will evaporate very quickly.

http://www.homegrownbud.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=9515&stc=1&d=1173266954

Here is a side shot of the butane bubbling away. You can see the sweet sweet honey oil gathering on the side!

http://www.homegrownbud.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=9516&stc=1&d=1173266954

The more it evaporates the thicker the extraction gets and the bigger and fatter the bubbles get.

http://www.homegrownbud.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=9517&stc=1&d=1173266954

Within a couple minutes...

http://www.homegrownbud.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=9518&stc=1&d=1173266954

Minute or two later, getting thicker now...

http://www.homegrownbud.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=9519&stc=1&d=1173266954

Total time for the butane to evaporate was under 10 minutes. I had to add a second pot of boiling water half way through due to the pile of snow the pyrex dish it is sitting on and the fact it's FUCKIN' COLD out! This is what I had when the bubbles stopped.

http://www.homegrownbud.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=9520&stc=1&d=1173266954

As you can see I use gloves to hold on to the extractor. This is because it can get damn cold, and wet, and that sucks. I used welding gloves, but thats probably overkill. This is the extractor about 10 – 12 minutes after the last of the butane was sprayed through. Mind you I'm stoned on this HO so my times may be off a bit.

http://www.homegrownbud.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=9521&stc=1&d=1173266954

These are the tools I use to clean out the pyrex dish. A razor, a metal pin, and a tea cup. I like this cup because I can get 100% of the oil back off of it, it can withstand all the flame I can give it, and is the cleanest way I have found so far to manage my HO. The metal pin is actually a bristle from the big rotating brushes on the bottom of a street cleaner. I find them all the time on street corners and along curbs, where ever streets are cleaned. Everyone I know also uses them now. They are perfect working with all type of oil. They slick perfect oil papers, clear resin from bowls and stems, scrape burnt on resin for cleaning to a shine, etc etc.

http://www.homegrownbud.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=9522&stc=1&d=1173266954

I scrape the pyrex nice and slow with a steady amount of force. This is a little tougher then it looks because the oil is thick like melted glass.

http://www.homegrownbud.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=9523&stc=1&d=1173266954

As I get enough oil on the blade, I run a quick flame over the blade to heat it enough to drip it all onto the bottom of the tea cup. It's important to note that you should use the flame gently, and try not to get black soot from the orange part of the flame in your oil. Heat it slowly, be patient.

This stuff is like freebase marijuana, I just can't get enough.

http://www.homegrownbud.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=9525&stc=1&d=1173267410

I wasn't happy with the amount of bubbles still in the oil by this point so I went at it with the heat gun to get the last of the bubbles out. by the time it cooled it was nice and clear. The metal pin here has an end ground down so that I can set it on the tip of a hot knife with a tiny dap of oil on it. it makes a pretty big lung-full of smoke from a matchhead sized drop of oil. The glob on the pin is a single toke.

http://www.homegrownbud.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=9526&stc=1&d=1173267410

Usually I leave the HO on the bottom of the cup, but this stuff was packaged to travel. Sticky mess to work with, but with a good stiff pin and a razor blade, you can get it done pretty good. The bag started out at 22.4 grams, after being cleaned of stalk and ground up it weighed 21.8 grams.
The total weight of oil extracted was 1.3 grams. The extracted weed weighed 19.8 grams

http://www.homegrownbud.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=9527&stc=1&d=1173267410

And of course, the part that makes it all worth it!!

Thanks for reading, and happy smoking!!!

Well, that write up was so well done, I might have actually decided to try this...you make it look a little too easy not to.:gthumb:

I am a joint person, not a huge fan of pipes, vapes, or bongs. One of the main reasons I guess is because I hate dealing with nasty sticky resin. I'm guessing (think you hinted) that I could smear some shmear on a rolling paper? Or a blunt wrap? Kinda afraid of hot knives too...might put my eye out. :D LOL, no seriously, just fearing that nasty resin....does this taste all clean?

Fantastic tutorial TPB!!! Love the pics... I'm a visual person myself so the pics help a lot. You used your bud, not the shake leaves to get your grams? I've made iso hash before but it didn't come out looking like honey, much drier.

I'll have to give this a try. Thanks! ~ Rav

I meant to add, I have heard ABS can react with butane. I've only heard it in a post and I asked for more info, but I didn't find any. The original Honey-Bee extractors I have been told are made from medical grade PVC. I have used mine 10+ times and see no visible signs of a reaction inside the tube. The plastic is the same smooth dull it has been since I made it.
Personally I am itching to change mine to stainless steel using a turkey baster, just like lungus's. I just haven't found a metal one yet. I may order the medical grade PVC sometime too, depending how broke ass I am. If I do I'll be sure to post where I foind the parts.

E-man, you absolutely should! This has got to be the most potent form of smoking MJ. Really only takes a small drop or two, and you can definitely spread it on a paper. I spread it in joints for other people to smoke often enough. It can be really heavy on the chest when smoked pure. When it is done, and IF you used the right butane, the oil will smell just like the original bag of weed. No chemical or butane smell at all. Just remember to be safe!!

Thanks Chronic! It is tasty for sure.

Thanks Thoth, I've been itching to add a DIY thread of my own, since i do almost everything this way, haha. Give it a try! I get higher off two three drops than I can off of a whole joint of weed. Just awesome stuff.

Hello Ravishing, nice to meet you! This is actually from a friend who distributes MJ. He saves up the stuff in the bottom of his 1/2 lb bags and brings it over to extract every now and then. If I was extracting a lot of leaf, I would use iso alcohol. When your extractor only holds an ounce of material and uses 2 - 3 cans of butane and can only extract .05 or .1 of a gram of oil then you're wastin' money. The big yeilds for BHO is in really crystaly nugs high in THC.
I have read of buds yielding 20% of their original weight. For reference I managed about 6% extraction rate this time.

Rockdog, thanks for reading man, glad you liked it!

elephunt man, dude, oil is the bomb on a doobie. a friend sent me some oil a few months ago. I'm still hitting it. the oil is mixed with just a bit of alcohol to keep it loose. I love to dip the end of a doobie in it. it soaks into the paper and wicks its way up. I let it sit for a while and let the alcohol evaporate.

after like half an hour, the oil has turned sticky and almost shellac like. and they burn and burn and burn. a doobie dipped in oil is a two punch that will guarantee to put you down.

excellent meds.

some company that makes bubble bags now makes an extractor. two different models. the small one is like forty five bucks. the double sized one is a little more. I think it would be great, but mrs wakka isn't having anything to do with a process that has explosion potential.

there aint nowhere, nohow in the suburbs of so cal.

500g any weed. (tech.rat-weed-6-7%, becoming 60-70%THC!!!!!!!)
Muslin/Cotton thin material- Sarong/asian wrap/shirt/skirt etc.
Solvent proof Gloves---.?
2 oven trays- approx. 15"x36"x3" deep.
5kg ice......at the end....like 2 weeks-ish!
flat knife/scraper
8x750ml bottles of 100% auto paint thinner

Same M.O. as our morning ,stone-stoned scientist with a lovely camera!
Except wring the weed out with 4x 750ml bottles of thinner- (all y'all conc. about your health, find out the best, purest solvent/gas/liquid to do the job)
-the weed wrapped in the cloth, your hands in safety gloves. wring it out into oven tray#1. Then change the cloth and bloody well do it again!
put it somewhere safe/warm rather than hot! wait until the thinner evaporates and there's a thick sludge left, about 10%-50-60g!!!
You'll know when it's ready cos it don't stink so bad and your joints taste good and don't ignite!
To get it out of the tray#1 into a Marmite/Vegemite/Hersheys Fucking Chocolate Jar you need to fill tray#2 with ice, put#1 in it and scape the shit off like trailer-homes did. Maybe you could heat it, but we live in the tropics and ice seems better. It ain't easy getting it off anyways....but "HellYeah!" it is worth it! Trainwreck as you yanks say......
hey, I did 2og of skunk with very good nail polish remover and a beer glass in 2 days but that's anuva story....

I use CRC QD (quick dry) no residue electrical contact cleaner. The can says safe for use in food processing and meat packing plants, so I assume it's pretty pure. (hexane) I'd be pretty leery of auto paint thinner. :2cents:

Works a treat tripps. I love hash oil especially dipped on a choice bud! It'll "train wreck" ya for most of the day so use it when you have nothing else that requires straight thought or action. :D

I'd be pretty leery of auto paint thinner.

yep me 2...commercial solvents won't always be 100% pure where when they evaporate they may leave something behind and will enter your lungs....but commercial will have a certain % of contamanites. I work with MEK, Laquar thinner, Naptha, Conversion varnishes, laquer, dyes and tints.
When i use butane I make damn sure it contains no methyl marcaptan. I will only trust msds sheets on anything i use. It will break down every component of the product and tell you what impurities and the % of whats in it.
Great way to check solvents is to do the mirror test. put the chem on the mirror and let evap...anything left over will show you how pure it is...in other words better be nothing left. ;)
medical grade solvents or like tripps mentioned used in food handling are the best routes to go. Butane go with cig light refillers but make sure it doesn't have the mythal marcaptan (gives butane/propane its smell)

Just my :2cents: made loads of oil in the past ; up to 2ozs at a time using many different brands of gas; also used the isopropol metheod but for taste potency clean smoke that resembles ganja nothing beats a good water filtration using good ice made with an RO filter, not ever going to do oil again and dumped the tools, didnt like the stuff hanging arround the pad but hell ice is water and aint nobody been banged up for that yet"excuse the pun":D

dude by the handle of "useless" posted these up for me a while back (damn near over 2 yrs ago). I haven't heard from him in over a year :( my fellow Diogenes reincarnate :p ..known him from another forum.
but this is prolly one of the best pics explaining methyl marcaptan i seen.
sure he won't mind me reposting them..he'd rather see peeps doin chit right and not kilin themselves.
1st pic "clean mirror"

2nd pic "impure butane" shows the methyl marcaptan left behind
http://www.homegrownbud.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18306&d=1223936311
3rd pic..pure butane not sure if pic was taken before the mirror defrosted or not. pretty sure it's defrosted  i use colibri and it wasn't that clouded...
http://www.homegrownbud.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=18307&d=1223936311

PLEASE NOTE:
MOST if not all camping grade butane contains a propane additive....DO NOT USE IT!!!!! Stick with the lil bottle lightewr refills. do not try to save a buck when making oil...ALSO please do this type OUTSIDE!!! potential rocket. ;)

Just picked up some of the QD (Quick Dry) CRC Contact cleaner for use in meat packing plants and the like that leaves no residue. Time fore some nice hash oil! :smoke1:
