soi-dro is pretty cool, the way chow does it is he runs a pvc pipe into the bottom of the pot and then puts an air stone in it. I'm sure he will provide pictures once he makes it back this way to the board.

Very cool!
What is that cloth? I imagine the roots can grow right through it..?
Do you hand feed from the top of the dirt?
Basically, give me an explanation to go with those pictures! :D I'm interested. I'm sure you're not doing it for no reason.

the cloth is called a capillary mat...the best i can describe it is it's like felt, but woven a little looser. And YES, the roots can grow through it.
as for the application and why...well i adapted it from soma's technique:
To get medicinal cannabis I grow on organic soil, rich in worm castings and all the other nutrients and trace minerals needed for a healthy weed plant. I don’t use pots to grow my buds, I use beds, flowering beds. These beds are made of wood put together with metal braces and screws; they are on wheels that rotate 360 degrees. They are 1.25 meters wide by 1.25 meters long and 35 centimeters high, (sorry after being here so long I think in centimeters). They are lined with waterproof plastic. The bottom 5 centimeters is clay pebbles called Hydrocorals. I then take plastic coated chicken wire and place it on top of the hydrocorals. On top of that I put a layer of felt root cloth, the kind most nurseries use under their potted plants. Roots of the Marijuana plant love air so I mix a lot of perlite in with my organic soil mix before filling the beds up. In each corner of the bed, I have a PVC tube 70 MM wide and 35 centimeters long. The tube goes down into the hydrocorals, through the root cloth, up through the 25 centimeters of soil, leaving 5 centimeters above the soils surface. These 4 tubes in each bed help the roots to have a constant air- flow, and the hydrocorals underneath make it almost impossible to over-water your garden.
The plants are spaced out as evenly as possible affording each plant as much light and space as they can get. They are given liberal amounts of black and brown seaweeds, both foliar and in the soil until the end of the 3rd week in flowering. Each plant has at least one stake supporting it as the buds get heavier and heavier. Leading up to the 3rd week in flowering, I have twisted and bent my tops in the tried and true method of super-cropping, giving them that added stress which makes the yield and taste better. In the 4th week, I give the plants some organic flowering food with an NPK of 1.5-13-14. I give it to the plants twice in that week. From the end of the 4th week in 12/12, I start to give the ganja my secret ingredient, Guano tea. The guano I use is a mix of bat and seabird guanos with an NPK of 2-15-2; this particular one comes from Indonesia. I like it because it has no smell. I take 100 grams of the dried guano and mix it with 2 quarts of hot water, stirring it with a plant stake until it is almost all dissolved. I then take an 8-ounce cup of the tea and add it to 10 liters of water with a PH of 6.6. I water the beds twice a week with this tea waiting until they are dry before applying it. I keep doing this until the middle of the 7th week in 12/12. With 10-week plants like the ones I’m growing now, I like to give them a good flush with water for two weeks or more before harvest. -Soma "Growing with Guano" by Soma (http://www.somaseeds.nl/magazine_articles/GrowingwithGuano.html)
(i top feed at the moment, but my have plans to use those pvc's for some bottom-up feeding during flower)

...1-gallon plain water across all three...
didn't see 'em yesterday at all.
looked at them today, one on left looking a bit "down"...maybe too much water? (didn't mix that much perlite in with my soil medium...maybe should have)
one in middle growing like a male...just shot-up "overnite" it seems
one on right like it's physically retarded
temps getting a bit warmer...~80s in the cab. gonna have to go to 12/12 soon.

My pardon if I missed an email buddy  I remember our last conversation regarding Uni's, but after that things changed. My pardon if I missed something...
As for the set up you had me cupping my chin between thumb and fore finger as soon as I'd seen it :) Any growing method that deviates from the pages of a book or 'the norm' will grab my interest mr C.
I do need to know one thing about clay pebbles and you're probably the man to ask. How labour intensive is washing the roots from the pebbles after a growing session? Reason I ask is I'm planning to fill a 9x12ft total area and was thinking of changing to F&D with pebbles but in a huge 9x12 tray and not pots.
Gotta say I'm pleased to see an old hand..... 2thumbs

How labour intensive is washing the roots from the pebbles after a growing session?dunno? this is the first time i have ever tried this setup. my guess is that once i chop, i'll grab the remaining trunk and pull up...the dirt and cloth should come up leaving the hydrotron on the bottom? or maybe not :o
we'll see once it happens...t-minus 8 or so weeks.

i think i've got fungus gnats or something...not a bad problem, for i've only seen one or two crawling around on the damp soil surface...
...definitely should've put more perlite in my soil mix...
just have to let the soil dry out a little more before rewater, that's all.

that sux
yeah, but i've only seen a couple gnat-like thingy-things flyin' around...could even be benign, but i've seen them on the soil, too...that's why i've begun to wonder...
...as far as i've read, it shouldn't be a big problemo, i've been stirring the top part of the soil to try to help it dry out a little faster...
:flog:
...and killing those little muther fawkers whenever i see 'em...
.i'll be forced to go 12/12 this weekend...temp are getting too hot.
plants will be just shy of 4 weeks old, and they're about 1 ft tall each, except for the gimp on the right. dunno what's going on with that one.
hope we see some girls and at least one boy...the chow mein needs to keep this hashplant seedstock going.

only saw one of those boogers flying around today.
by the way, that reminds me...what's the last thing that goes through a bugs mind when he hits the windshield of a car?
his ass
:D
anyway...went in the garden and did a little finger stressing to the plants.
finger stressing? you say...
well, it's another of soma's techniques where you go, grab the main stem a few nodes down from the top and kinda rub your finger and your thumb together. squashing and twisting with just the right pressure...
...this is my first time to try this method...
:watch:
.let's see if i flucked them up or not.

I've had fungus knats in my veg/mother cab MC, and a sticky fly paper always seemed to get em for me :2cents: I also hung one above the plants as well as one either end, that way each time I went in I shook the plants and the critters always seemed to fly around and up... and stuck!
Can't you fill the last inch of the pots with perlite?

Neither. This is the twilight zone. We control the vertical lines, and also the horizontal lines......
E-Man has a point with coco. With us it needs to be PH correct otherwise I'd have done the tangent thing and advised putting a stretched condom around the top of each pot.
Thing is, used ones are way off the PH scale for mj and I ain't wasting unused condoms on a plant that can get you fooked.....
Sex in peace.
