I was wondering if there was a way around big fan leaves. Can i make a loop with string, yarn, etc. and tighten it around the leaves to cinch them together so that i can get more light penetration? Almost like putting all five finger tips together on one of your hands. Would this cause a problem?

The big fan leaves are where you want the light for the most part...not the buds.

yeah, what the Elephunt said.
They're like solar panels for growth.

Have grown buds that were completely covered by fan leaves, and they grew just like the rest of 'em.
You can try and maneuver the leaves with yarn, try and get the best of both worlds.
Should be fine though!

The plants need the carbs in flower that those big ole leaves contain. Manipulation works but IMHO it is not nessasary.

your girls need those leaves to give you the best possible bud. I don't even trim mine when they turn yellow, I take them off when the plant is ready to release them. Even when they are yellow they can still get rid of stuff the plant doesn't want. Good luck.
