View Full Version : worm poo
I'm ready to start a worm bin and think i have done enough research to get going.
This will cost nothing as I have all that is needed. Nice big ice chest and a few pile's of pear leaf and pears composting and the red wigglers seem to like it :D
I have a few other things in mind as well with poo and house hold waste as well as my junk mail ;)
will post up my trails and err's in pics if anyone is interested...
thx EM and FING for your help and info

Hey I known some peeps with coolio worm bins, and one trick I picked up bigtime is called "Worm Shakes." Heh heh...
Just take the food scraps, especially stuff like lettuce, leafy stuff, celery tops, apple cores, etc. and mix them up with just a little water and blend them in a blender before pouring on top of the bin. Then ya can either just kinda lightly mix it into the top layer or not, it's just more readily available if ya do.
I got the Worm Shakes from a guy in N. Cali who also happens to work at a HUGE commercial Earthworm Casting operation that supplies a lot of growers in the Napa Valley area in Cali. SO I always listen closely to anything he wants to tell me about worms farming hahaha.
I just keep worms living in my base mix tote now, and the day before I wanna use any real amounts of my base mix, I just either use some cannabis leaves all shredded or a Worm Shake and I put that down on one side of my tote. All the worms go over there to "party" and I rarely see any as long as I stay on the other side of the tote to get any soil I need. I have two species now in my tote, red wigglers and these really trippy black nightcrawelers a buddy of mine sent me from The Appalachian Mountains.
Anyways bro just my .02 hope it inspires ya :D

Castings get so expensive I thinnnk I will have to do the same thing cause I just ran out of dirt transplanting "most" of my plants except about 8-10.
I saw they sell night crawlers at places like wally world... would these work?
Sounds like fun!

red wigglers
soz about being late to my own party
here's what I did..... few months ago i piled up small piles of leafs in the yard :D
this brings the worms that you need if you do this for free ;)
drilled a few hole in the ice chest and covered with old window screen to keep them in and bugs out
I put in 3 inches of maple leaf (they really like maple) then 3 inches of horse deer and wild rabbit poo in (no meat eater poo) then about a qt of mushrooms some ground up egg shell and coffee grounds as well as filter, then 3-4 more inches of maple leaf.
plobly have 200 worms so far of all sizes
thx for your input everyone, here's some info on wigglers CLICK (http://www.redworms.com/)

Hope this question isn't too stupid, but are the castings used as organic fertilizer or as organic soil, or is it part of a soil mix?
Thanks.

watch it Boss, an earthworm can lay 100 eggs every two weeks..
You might stop gathering and start looking for good homes for your grandkids!
and here are some more specifics on worms and the fert content of their castings:
http://www.ecosyn.us/ecocity/Links/My_Links_Pages/Castings_01.htm
friend brought over some worms today :D said around 1000
as well as 1000 more next week
I have piles of horse steer rabbit and deer poop doing the hot compost now as well :D
I just kinda spread them out on the top and left the lid open for 15 minutes and all where gone deep within the bin
things I have been feeding them...
poop
egg shell ground up
oster shell ground up
coffee grounds
junk mail... no plastic
news paper... free ones
bread
veggie's
mushrooms from yard
alfalfa from barn... left over stuff from the pasture renters.. country folk can probly pick it up road side as i see it all the time, falls off a truck ;)
house hold garbage will work fine just no meat or dairy
get them fert factors going guys... it can be done for free no problem

my grandparents love to fish..they had a old ammo box mounted to the window sill at the kitchen window..It was handy to have there for granny and the stuff from the kitchen all good things went in to the box, and worms that we found in the fields,(farmland) we had a can that each one of took out..I remember that my little brother was sent out behind the plough and to get the worms that it pulled up. It was the highlight of our farmland days to put the worms in that ammo box and feed them some dinner just like us..He or She who had the most worms got a treat from granny , but then again we was all winners in regarding the worm box.. worms are good things.. coffee was put in there everyday i remember

You know that everyone has your back here.
If you're still around.....BUMP
I used some 40oz cups before.
You have to water more often between feedings or make the feedings 1/2 strength until they can handle the small amount of soil drying faster than larger pots and containers.
This can cause a pH shifts, deficiencies or lockouts. That's the only real problem I ran into.
pH all feedings to be on the safe side too.
...sure wish I saw this earlier....
