Hey all I was just wondering how come when I harvested my buds were big but like airy or whispy and weren't dense at all in mass. Is this a strain by strain trait or did I fuck something up? Also, I seemed to get more weight in stems and leaves than bud, is this normal?
Thanks ;)

can be strain related.....could be lack of light.what was the growing enviroment like?hot?plenty fresh air???
could be a number of reasons.
what light ya useing mate??and how far from the plants is it??

read somewhere that too much heat during the flowering stage can cause fluffy buds.
did you dry them fully before putting them into jars? did you do the paper bag stage?

400w hps used, light about 1 foot away from plants, avg. temps were about 70-75, and yes I dried them using the paper bag method for more than 2 weeks.
Could too much humidity have an effect on this? Rel. Humidity was about 55-70%

Dooby, I think it's a little tough to get really dense buds out of a 400 watt. I havent had much luck in my two grows.
Um, like everyon has noted, it could be from a ton of things.... anything that pisses your plants off ( too much heat, not enough light intensity ) or strain related. have grown some semi-dense buds and some fluffy ass buds all at the same time.

Would more reflective material help? Or need a bigger light?
bigger the light the bigger the buds sure but, grow room conditions play a huge part in it... seen some crazy stuff done with all kinds of lights as long as ya have the right amount :D and conditions
think I'm around 85 watts per sq foot in flower but thats just a ruff guess without break'n out a Texas instrument type device :D
temps Rh freash air all play a big part in the final product

definatly easier to get faster growth rates with 1000's, but with good cond. and reasonable good strain dense buds are easily atainable with a 400 watter. esp. at the top. seen afwreck, blueberry, skunkxlavender, kush, g13, hashplant all get hella dense under 400. I've seen chron under a 250, you just gotta keep your plants (plant) as close a possible.

I agree jj i have used 250's and smaller as well as 1k's... just set up the grow room right and all will be good :D

we grow with a four hundred, and one thing we have learned is to have a fan blowing between the light and the tops of our plants. it seems to blow a good deal of the heat away and you can get the light a bit lower.

Thank you all for the help, next time I will improvise a little bit and see what happens ;)

IMHO, the only difference between the two is in the baggy! After all it's the trics that get one high, not the size/weight of the bud:>)

yea i know i just want big dense buds instead of airy thin ones :D

What strain did you grow?? I didn't see you mention it, some strains are light airy buds. How many plants under the 400?? I can get nice solid cola's no problem with a 400 as long as there are not to many plants and air flow ,temps PH and soil is dialed in . You try to grow to much with that light and you could end up with airy buds.

Sorry for delayed reply :o
I dont know what strain this batch was. It was just a couple of beans I got in a dank sack of chron. ;)
There were 5 initially under the 400 but then 3 once I yanked the males. There was decent airflow, I guess it could have been better though.

yeah dude, density it really strain specific. Airflow is very key, as well as optimal temps, but IME with quality, higher temps, and humidity, makes the plant stretch more, and get cobweb mold, in mostly indica varitaties. Mostly sativa varities wont strectch as much, and have much less chance as mold, but can also get quite airy when the temps climb over 85F for 24 hour periods, or 95F during light cycle.
I only wish indica's would get more airy as the humidity climbs, it'd make shit easier.

Higher humidity does impact the density of your buds. Higher humidity more fluff less density. :(

You ever try a 100% sativa in a closet?

dude I was talking about with regards to humidity. Sativa's are genetically pre-desposed to humid enviroments.
Natural selection has caused sativa's to naturally have more internodal space then indica's thoughout the cycle to avoid mold building up in flower structure.
Humidity and heat will not play as large of a role in the plants growth if it is from a type usually grown near the equator. Quality sativa's do have lots of nodes, regardless of hieght.
In contrast Indica's generally come from an area genetically pre-desposing them to Hot DRY climates. They don't have as many genes to allow them to change based on high humidity(stretching, airy buds, thinner leaves, more internodal spaces).

sativa's get huge regardless as long as light a ferts are right. Stretching is more common is sativa's due to not enough light. Some sativa's need hella more light then indica's because they're genetically predisposed to needing because the light is commonly more intense where they come from.

is a nice plant. hella big. Couldn't see too well by the pic size but I can tell those cola's are fucking huge.:mmmm:

I should probly point out it ain't my plant or pic, just found it and thought it funny, a typical "sativa in a closet"

Well my temps were high during light cycle and humidity could have been lower but hey you learn from your mistakes, I know how to do this next season.... :D
