I didn't really know where else to put this question so I stuck it here. :o
So, do most of you have a generator? If not what do you do if you loose power during a storm or some other incident? It would really suck to be a couple weeks from harvest and have the power go out... you could loose your whole crop and for some of us (starting from seed) that could be 4 or more months of tending gone.
So if you have a generator, what kind?
hey bro Mine is a bit over kill but a honda 6500 watt.. mainly used at the hunting cabin but as backup power as well.
we can go days here with out power at times do to storms and the like....
Remember never plug one in/or wire it direct to your house as the service peeps get pretty excited when there is power come'n back at them from your generator and being steped up by your nearest transformer
6500 will power 220 no prob and run most all in your house if need be :D

But seriously....
Heed CB WARNINGS...... tis very dangerous fer the Linemen when repairing your lines if you're hooked up to your service box/ panel with a generator!! :electric:
Either install a proper service box/ panel or just do it the easy way....... plug the "Appliance" into the generator itself.
And if you are running a generator with the power out....... you can almost expect a Knock on the door from a serviceman asking you about your generator........ how & what it's hooked up too?
Of course your reply will be, "Why, my freezer....... dun want the meat ta spoil, and a couple lights to read by.... NO the generator is not hooked directly to the service panel." :teef:
Typically though if you're in a urban setting a short power outage should not effect the end "Product". About the only thing that it will do is screw up your timers.
:lamp:
I always jus leave em be.... I have a couple timers and getting them in sink is a bit tricky.
Also...... if your gunna have a generator..... welp it jus goes hand in hand ta have lotsa spare fuel...... er what good does it do really?
Ya cant jus run down to the local gas station and "Pump" sum outa the tank, now can ya.
Storage of fuel is another HAZZARD to take into thought.... make sure your storage tanks are Grounded properly and that you have a fire extinguisher near by.... not next to the tanks. :slap:
Also..... you wouldn't happen to have any "Kids" about do ya? That maybe like ta play with matches?

Thanks guys, I live a ways out from town and we don't loose power very often but it does happen once or twice during winter every year. Some times for more than a day which I think would certainly increase the chance of hermie-ing.
Goog advice, except the peddling... Welshmen... sheesh :halol:
So Fred, I shouldn't tell the repairman that I have my grow lights hooked to it? :erm: :courtjester:

I'm lookin at the Coleman Powermate 5500 Watt Endura Generator Yamaha 10hp Model PM0645500 from Home Depot.
I got a Credit Card with no interest until Jan. 2008 so I think I'll pick it up and pay it off by dec. 2007... can't beat an intrest free loan! ;)
thx for the pic fing, was gonna grab one myself but no need they look the same hehe :D
drumin that will be a great investment and should have no prob doing what you want.... 1 thing to look for is, is it stable enough for your pc. ?
they state if they are or not.. just something to think about
fred around here we can still get gas no probs like as most local fuel depot's have hand crank pumps as well just for those times ;)
enjoy your new toy bro

Man I know lately I have had a few power inturruptions, but I ain't seen one last for more than an hour or so, and I ain't got no generator heh heh but here's a way you can save your baybees from hermies as long as you are there I mean....
*ANY* light will keep them on track; I have a little rechargable COleman type lantern that will cast light for about 10 hrs+ and if that were to run out I would go to candles if need be.
Cannabis is very photosensitive, as you well know, so any light will make them think it's still daylight and keep them from freaking on you in my experience :gthumb:
They also sell these lights that stay plugged into the wall or an outlet, and they stay off and charged up unless the power fails then they come on. Now these should be used with GREAT CAUTION and only plugged in like say during a lightcycle where you fear a powerr outtage and you will be away for several hours. DON'T LEAVE IT PLUGGED IN DURING ANY DARK CYCLE for obvious reasons, power fails and POOF light! Heh heh

I picked up a little 'drill motor water pump' I was thinking could come in handy, I have several cordless drills laying around. My hydro setup isn't finished yet, so I can't say how well it works, but just thought I would share the idea. I would like to add a small natural gas generator one day.
That emergency light is a great idea. Thanks.
You have 48 hours or so that you are fine with maybe it'll stretch the plants but that's okay
We camp a bit so we have a little car battery thing for some lighting it could prob run my old 400w for a bit
Hyrdo guys I highly recomend you go to a fishing store and get a little battery powerd pump don't cost much and could save your res from getting mucked up
the big thing round here is that we loose power in the winter, so cold becomes the issue, I have a little propane space heater I use .. and am constanly in a pariniod fever when I do.. watch it constanly .. don't want to burn down the house.. then we would be homeless weedless and nakedin the snow:eek:

After the Oct surprise snow storm 2 years ago that had power out for 4-5 days I bought a gas powered generator that will run 12 on a tank of fuel and I keep a tank or two of spare fuel during the winter for just that reason. I had to use it this year for a 24 period after a wind storm disrupted the grid. Works great. I'll be keeping a small electric heater by the grow in case this happens. We use wood pellets for most of our heating but do need a little electric to run the blowers and auger on the pellet stove as well as on the natural gas furnace. No freezing again for us. :D
