was doing some cruising, and came across the wick method of hydroponics. flower pot on top of bucket of nutes, with a wick dangling in the water and going up through a hole in the bottom of the pot. the water soaks up the wick and keeps the soil or hydro rock moist, and there of course to the plant.

has anybody ever tried this? seems pretty reasonable to me. you could put one or two on a long low rubbermaid, put a couple of air stones in and hit it.

the article said you could use a lot less liquid than you would use in a five gallon bucket hydro setup. and because the plant itself would never be in the liquid, it would remain a lot cleaner and easier to keep the p h balanced.

sure made a lot of sense to me.

I started with that method and it worked great, For some reason I just deciced to go soil after that, I think cuz it was recomended by someone. I got great results though. I've read that oxygenation of the roots occurs easily in this method because the wick is suspended in the air from the solution to the plants, so it is constantly sucking up air, as well as water.

I'll have to try again I think.

I've read a few posts around the WWW. So don't take this as fact please.
but what I read was that MJ is so thirsty and fert hungry that the wics don't supply it fast enough for the plant.
but I guess if enough wics were added it would work good.
I'd like to see a grow journal with the results tho. I think it is a very inexpensive hydro method and pretty much mistake proof.
Thanks for the post. I was always curious on this method. Only time I seen it with pics was rosenthauls "closet cultivator" book.

sorry I haven't posted in a while. good days, bad days.

I can't fine the original posts I read, but have found a lot more posts other than the first few I stumbled across, and most say that it's o k for small grows, and some vegging, but not for flowering when the water intake is at it's highest.

so, it can't be used safely for flowering, but for clones? I wonder if it would be useful for a few clones? two margarine bowls? water in the bottom bowl, with a hole in the lid for the wick, the one on top filled with hydro stone, with a few clones stuck in them?

maybe, it's a real passive set up for sure.

I seen one done like that. I think it was called a DIY mass cloner for under 5 bucks @ Gardenscure. The guy used two dish pan things stacked and did exactly what you siad. All the materials could be had at Wal-mart and the dollar store or something. Its worth a search.
