Visitor faces jail for possessing marijuana

Dubai: An American visitor who said he was unaware that he was carrying marijuana with him, which was found in his luggage at airport, will spend four years in jail.
Dubai Court of First Instance found the suspect, identified as M.O. and in his late 30s, guilty of illegally bringing in and possessing 0.14 grams of marijuana, as charged by the public prosecution. He would be deported after serving the jail term.
The accused had pleaded guilty to illegally smuggling and possessing the marijuana. He had told the court: "I plead guilty to bringing in and possessing the drugs. I did not realise I had it." He said he did not intend to use it.
When asked by the presiding judge, Mahmoud Al Sharshabi, why he carried the drugs, M.O. replied "I use marijuana in my country", admitting that he has used drugs.
When he heard that he is being charged with possessing 0.14 grams of marijuana, he claimed that he was not told about the quantity earlier.
