I don't know man... even with a carbon filter... even if you could rent without anything connecting you to it there will still be finger prints or hair... too easy to get busted by some nosey person. Plus you have to go there constantly so you'll arouse suspicions as to what's going on in there. :cold:
I wouldn't do it. IMHO. It would be way to easy to get set-up. Cops get a tip or something. You go to change out the water. and BAM. Not like an OD grow where you can scope the place out and have your dog by yourside to alert ya. Way to risky IMHO.

No one has said anything about the additional electricity consumption...that seems to be such a high reason for investigations to start in the States. I can't imagine that the storage company would not question a spike in their electricity bill. Just my 2 cents worth :D

Bingo!
I've rented my share of units from time to time and don't recall ever having any electrical outlets in any of them. They didn't even have their own lighting in most.
Those places normally have all the lights on timers in the hallways or common areas so when there's nobody there, there's no electricity. Even if your unit has outlets, and you can use them, the spike as mentioned will be found, if not the smell, activity around the unit, noise of pumps..... etcetera
forget it.

you would have to first consider the air quality in that environment. it might be stuffy from all of the shit people have been storing in there for years. if you could get a light going you could get in there to sterilize the place but i don't recommend turning the whole thing into a grow room.
if theres electricity to your storage unit I would be surprised. I only know of there being outlets in the hallway of indoor facilities. if you used the facilities power, it would show a spike in the monthly costs to the storage company. depending on the size of the company, they may or may not notice the difference in price. even if they did notice a difference in price, they probably wouldn't be able to isolate where it came from on their circuits. this might cause suspicion and people may snoop around, possibly listening for fans or clues.
you could try using some of the methods that trailerparkguy uses and build growcabs out of old furniture. it would be easy to get the cabs in since people tend to store old furniture in storage units. that way you wouldn't be seen carrying grow room supplies and boxes in, or be caught in the act of building it.
as far as power goes, say you used a bureau or dresser. if you didn't want to use the facilities power, you would need a power supply of some sort. that small of a grow cab could be run off of car batteries or possibly backup batteries of some sort.
you could create a good climate and remove the smell if you got a mini ac unit and some carbon filters to recycle the air. you would have to consider power consumption and how long the power supply would last. car batteries can charge on a trickle charge in 24 hours, but you may be transporting car batteries in and out frequently.
the next issue is the water. i would use 5/gal jugs to bring in R/O water. those collapsible camping water jugs work well, or you could probably fill a rubbermaid tub. you could then bring the rubbermaid tubs in on a dolly. this would be done more often than not. i would use a hand pump in this situation when exchanging water. bring in some 5/gal buckets to help exchange water.
water temp is also important. depending on power and room temperature you may or may not want to add a water cooling system/
you would need to monitor water temperature, ph, and nutrients regularly.
i think for the right price, it could be done properly. make sure you have a safe plan before attempting a stunt like this. i myself would probably not attempt this but definitely let me know what you end up doing or if it works.

I do quite a bit of work for a string of local self storage facilities and I'd be willing to bet they would figure it out. Maybe not the first few weeks but they would know eventually. Sure seems like a dangerous plan.

Doesn't sound like a very wise idea...
