What's in your soil mix? Ideally, this thread can serve as a resource for anyone wishing to emulate anothers proven way of growing herb.
Who, What, When, Why, Where, How. Although all of these questions may not apply, the five W's are a good start to answering anything. Keep in mind that sometimes information you may take for granted, might as well be greek to someone else.
Spark one up and get to typing.

Soil: Master Nursery Gardeners Gold, Organic potting soil.
"A rich, all natural blend of finely screened, composted fir bark fines, worm castings, real topsoil, redwood peat moss, chicken manure, and sand. pH balanced with dolomite and oyster shell limes. Rich in long-lasting plant nutrients. Water saving formula. Provides excellent drainage. Good for all indoor or outdoor container plants."
Additions? 30% perlite.
My mix is very basic, and isn't much of an example. However, It worked and I feel it allowed me to fert pretty heavy, seeing as the mix itself is simple.
How about you?

What a great thread. I started my first grow this season and began the whole thing long before I found these sites. I am an old flower grower, so not knowing any better I treated my mj just like any other plant. I germed them straight in peat pots and then moved them into plain old multi-purpose compost that I use for my own mix. I use compost, peat moss, a good handful of blood, fish and bone, a generous amount of perlite and a good helping of water retention crystals. I will certainly be watching this thread because I have set my mind to using this winter as a 'learn all I can' about outdoor growing and have a much better crop next year. Thanks for starting it gorilla...
foxfarms ocean forest with nothing add'd......
The ultimate potting soil—everything your plants need, in one bag. Ocean Forest® is a powerhouse blend of premium earthworm castings, bat guano, and Pacific Northwest sea-going fish and crab meal. Composted forest humus, sandy loam, and sphagnum peat moss give Ocean Forest® its light, aerated texture. Start with Ocean Forest® and watch your plants come alive!
Garden tip: Perfect for containers and ready to use right out of the bag. Ocean Forest® is pH adjusted at 6.3 to 6.8 to allow for optimum fertilizer uptake. There’s no need for nitrogen fertilizers at first; instead try an organic blend like FoxFarm Big Bloom™ Liquid Plant Food to encourage strong branching and a sturdy, healthy growth habit.

I too started my first grow before finding this site. I just germned the seeds between wet paper towels and then planted the seedlings (2) into some Miracle Grow potting soil. Fortunately I found ya'll cause it wasn't long before I had questions. So my soil mix is pretty bland but with my WW grow I will definately use some suggestions from this thread. Thanks for starting it G.

Heh heh yep yep... here's my modifications to realy bring that mix to life bro:
First add this dynamic in the link below...
http://www.homegrownbud.com/forums/showthread.php?p=13033#post13033
3 parts Ocean Forest
1 part 50/50 mix of large nugget Perlite and Vermiculite
1 part woody chunky topsoil
My actual mix is much more complex and requires a fairly large array of organic elements, but this one works Grrrreat!

:) Yeah man, I too am a BIG fan of Ocean Forest soilmix, and a friend of mine not too long ago, finished a killer plant about 3' tall that yielded about 3oz of prime smoke in JUST Ocean Forest alone, but in a 5 gal container too heh heh.
He said compaction was a tad of a prollem, the Vermiculite/Perlite fixes that. Since OForest uses really cool exotic shit in their mix, really micro-heard friendly, and the chunky topsoil promotes further good airation and even moisture throughout the mix. Plus gives the micro-beasties great organic matter to work on ;)

With ocean forest, is it necessary or beneficial to add things like: bone meal, blood meal, phosphate, or other organic elements? Will it be too much, or is there no need? Does just the bottom layer take care of that? ( Bottom layer = meaning RolanTerroys fomula there )

The bottom roots are a lot different than the upper roots as far as what their purpose is, speaking adaptive-wise...
My little additions of the GSand blend and earthworm castings and prilled dolomite give those bigger lower roots something to "chew" on and I gaurentee your overall plant happiness along with potency, yields and everything important will rise. This will also make additions of liquid nutrients to be given in smaller dosages cuz the suckers will stay totally happy and healthy!
One more addition I would recomend for this, once you are in a 3gal container or larger, about 1/2 cup of steer (or cow if need be) manure (composted) in the very bottom of the container on the "floor" also and around the rim, kinda pushed away from the center; once the big hunter-roots find this stuff your growth rates will double heh heh, at least LoL!

When the big roots find these little buried treasure chests of nute zones, you will see them react, like the leaves may get a little wavey for a couple days, some leaves may turn away from the light, a few tips may burn slightly on the lowers, these are all no worries and just like a person gets into a jacuzzie, it's all yikes for a minute then ahhhhhhhhhhh! :) then WoW! :p

well....I agree to say Ocean Forest does it all with a slight soil compaction during growing if left as is......but grows great plants.
I start with Foxfarm Ocean Forest Soil and add my yummies at different stages of growth and translants.
seedling and sprouts
FFOF and worm castings, perlite
1st transplant
FFOF with worm castings, tbls bloodmeal, tbls bonemeal, 3 tbls greensand plus, tsp seaweed meal and lime, perlite.
2nd transplant if needed
FFOF, worm castings, perlite, tbls mexican bat guano, tbls jamaican bat guano, greensand plus, lime and maybe coco coir to lighten things a bit and keep it aerated.;)
As of recent Ive started using a 1:1 ratio of Botanicare's Ready Grow with the Foxfarm Ocean Forest Soil mix.:D
....a soilles organic grow media....I use the moisture formula.
so far so good......it's just personal choices in my opinion...because we all tweak our grows in some fashion for a better harvest.
