Hi all,
I'm growing a Bubba Kush in a bubbler and she's on flower day 59, under 2000W HPS. I'm looking for help on when to take her down. I'd like to let her go until she stops asking for food? I think??
As far as the nutrients, I'm not real good at what does what. But I seem to have come up with a combination that works for me, my water and my garden. I use silicon, GH micro and bloom, and cal/mag. A new bucket gets mixed up with 15 ml silicone, 25 ml micro, 50 ml bloom and then 25 ml cal/mag. This gives me readings of pH 5.6/17. I use this mix for top ups in veg and flower and res changes in flower.
Normally, I use the pH to tell me if the plant wants plain water or nute water. pw = plain water 7.0/0. nw = nute water 5.6/17
Here are the readings for the last few weeks. I use CF instead of EC because I don't like the decimal point. Change CF to EC by moving the point to the left one point. 1.5 EC = 15 CF.

She's drinking solid nutes for now. I figure she will stop asking for nutes when she's done???

Hi cranky,
never go above ph 6.0 aye????
Not always. It's been above, but not for long.
most cloudy with a few amber.
That seems to work for too long. Checking just after the flowers are formed gives me mostly cloudy with a few amber as do the older ones??? But if I let it go longer and give them a chance, the buds get much heavier without much change in the trichomes?
any chance of a macro shot?
Unfortunately, I'm not a great photographer and haven't had any macro shot's turn out. :(
ps.thanks for your help in my journal...your a star
Thank you so much! I just helped you with time, that's all. You would have gotten there yourself. :D
Hi gorilla,
It seems like you know what you're talking about, although I sure as hell don't.
I know, it's a lot of numbers! I'm just posting my log so maybe, hopefully, someone can read it and give me some pointers. :D
The main reason I stopped using the trichomes was because when I harvested by them, I got fluffy buds. Now I get nice dense nugs. :D My first harvest using this method is almost finished curing and I'll test it any day now. The finish weight was amazing-over 1 lb from one plant. :D
Thanks for stopping in to check out my lady. :D
All the best,

So how is it you determine when to harvest now that gives you dense buds?

when i say trichs i mean the the crystals/frost.i very much doubt that ya have amber trichs that early on or ya would be able to smoke it and get wrecked that early on in flowering??

Wow, so many responses, thanks all! :p
Sorry for posting here. :o I'm pushing the "accepted" method of growing and then in the end I ask for help-knowing everyone is going to suggest I cut her down. :( :blah: :x: I'm not sure why I did, just feeling insecure, sorry again.
I know we all live in fear of letting the plants go "too long", loosing all our hard work and ending up with an unsmokable result. But, I can't remember ever actually hearing someone say they went too long?? Does anyone have bad experiences from letting their plant go too long? I'd love to hear your experiences!
I took a Morning Star down after 88 days (week 13) of flowering last month and it will be ready for testing as soon as I empty my current grinder (which will probably take a few days). I got just over a lb on the plant, which is what I've come to expect from my ladies.:D She dried for two weeks, after a wet trim, and will finish 30 days curing on the 1st. I weighed her just before putting her into cure so she might loose a little more weight, but I don't expect her to loose much.

I will take harvest pictures, just for you!
Hi gorilla,
So how is it you determine when to harvest now that gives you dense buds?
I'm trying to listen to the plant and cut nutes when she wants them cut, instead of arbitrarily cutting them when I think she should be ready? What worked for the Morning Star was I waited for her to ask for 2 weeks of plain water and then I harvested her?
Hi Dooby420,
Thanks for stopping in. :hello:
Hi cranky,
I hear you on the trichomes! I've seen lots of pictures. Thanks for the effort-I really appreciate it. :D But I see a tons! of gardeners who supposedly harvest when they see color in the trichomes and they end up with fluff. It seems to me the trichomes start turning as soon as the flowers are set. Like the first layer turns but it doesn't give the buds a chance to fill in? You've seen the buds get real heavy and hang down, right? That doesn't usually start on my plants until after the suggested harvest window. Do you have different experiences?
My theory on how the plants grow in flower is: (from lilbud99 at another site)
They stretch for a few weeks 1-3
bud formation weeks 2-6
and finally 6-8 for maturing.
And another gardener I respect said to never cut a plant down before 9 wks of flowering. (from penguin at another site)
It seems, to me, most people take their plants down about the beginning of bud formation, without giving them time to finish forming and maturing. From my experience, each time I've let the plants go a little longer than the time before and it seems to be getting better and better. I find it hard to believe but I've had people tell me my smoke's too strong and they won't smoke it? Maybe this is the "too far," but I like it.
Thank you all for your responses. I really appreciate it. :D

Today was mixed in the garden.
After I finished hooking up the carbon filter I noticed the Bubba Kush had spider mites on one of the main buds! She came down right after that. No signs of them else where, thankfully. Did they just attack this one because I wasn’t able to keep her healthy? I think they like the unhealthy ones.
Everything left in the garden got treated with Avid. Filled a standard spray bottle up and added 3 drops of the stuff. Sprayed the whole thing in the garden paying special attention to the bottom of the leaves. Take that you miserable suckers! :blast: :blast: :blast: Then I noticed some bud rot on the Hindu Kush so she’s coming down tomorrow. :( That leaves two big holes in the garden and I don’t have anything ready to go in.:( I hate it when that happens! Like I said earlier, if things don’t work as planned, I guess it’s time for a work slow down. :( And I'm happy it isn't a total stoppage. Maybe it's time for a deep cleaning in the room? Probably not. You know how bad stoners can be. :D
I put a second one in a bubbler in the veg area tonight. The two in bubblers now are at about the same development stage, and they have a couple weeks left before they will be big enough to flower. :( The original one was topped last night the second was topped tonight. Both had their bottoms trimmed last night.
Oh and when I pulled the one out of the ebb n flow I saw algae! I don’t have any idea how people grow in these things! I added a little H2O2 and will do a res change tomorrow.
The trim is finished and now it’s time for pictures!

I have felt disappointed with her for quite a while. The center stuff always seemed like it would never get beyond the bubble fluff stage. But, I was pleasantly surprised with how much I was left with after trimming, and only a very few buds ended up as fluff. Most of it was decent sized :D She was a little over 3’ total height and you can see I don’t trim fan leaves while she's growing. I am also pleasantly surprised with the colors that show up in the pictures.

You can see what I was talking about earlier with the middle buds being very pale and the outer ones got more color.

This is the harvest stacked in one tray. I ended up splitting it into two trays for drying.

Darn! Jamesgames' last harvest had a bigger stem. Missed my target, but not by much. :D I was hoping to get more as he has set the standard I want to reach. On his, I saw stem around the quarter. This one is just the size of the quarter. I still need to work harder to catch him! I wonder what he ended up with? It’s a shame he doesn’t weight!
My weigh in will happen in two weeks and the taste test a month after that.

And a close up of an outer bud.
While she was growing I was wondering why everyone seems to enjoy her so much?. She didn’t grow right. You can see the variations in some of the pictures. The last two bud pictures show close ups of two extremes. I ended up with two trays and another couple of buds were lost to mold. The moldy ones went into the trim sack - to be used for the bubbler bags, later. I’ve heard, and firmly believe, NEVER smoke moldy weed! And it’s okay in the bubbler bags.:)
All the best,

Hi all,
Sorry, I just figured this one would drop into the archives. Since it didn't I guess it's time for an update. I don't keep track of most of the weight at harvest and I didn't record what she gave me. I believe it was a little over a lb-3 gallon bags dried.
I'll just include my current pride and joy in this update.

And two from Flower Day 35
She's a Morning Star (sativa) and currently on flower day 35. She's drinking about 2 gallons a day. In flower, I currently have 2 Morning Star's, one Bubba Kush and 2 Black Spices. Next up is a Hindu Kush-if it doesn't get too big before I have space in the flower room.
I've also upgraded my 5 gallon paint buckets to official 20 gallon reservoirs-or at least 4 got upgraded. They were just collecting dust as they weren't working in the original set up I had.
The Kush's finished and are gone. They were a big success. I was surprised because I love my sativas as you can tell by the current set up. The colors are what helped.
All the best,
Lollie
