take a water glass, a few sheets of paper towels. fold the paper towels and then roll them into a tube. take the paper towels and put them inside the glass. put your beans between the glass and the paper towels. they should stay suspended quite nicely.
fill the glass about half way up. the water will wick up the towel and keep the seeds moist. put the glass in a dark cupboard and walk away. check back once a day and see if the cup needs more water.
never fill the glass with water to the seed level. keep it about an inch or two below them.
it's a classic way to germ your seeds. you can see if they have popped without disturbing them, you can check water level without disturbing them, and the seeds almost always seem to grow in the right direction, plus having just a little resistance between the paper towel and the glass makes that baby root just a little stronger.
I might point out that this way was thought up long ago for teachers due to it's success rate. no way do you want a class that has half it's lima beans not germ.
damn little ankle biters.

Thats a cool germination method wakka, very interesting..personally I'd be worried about the seeds fallin into the water and drownin? I guess the paper towel when it gets wet does a good job stickin to the glass? I'll have to try this.
PS No recollection of the 3rd grade here ;)

yup, the paper sticks to the inside of the glass because it's wet. seeds wont fall into the water. it also seems to have just the right amount of resistance, roots come out nice and strong.
hell, I'm fourty eight years old. third grade was a long, long time ago....

in the next month or so a little experimentation would be cool.
hmm strong baby roots, I like that from the start.

if you look around the net, you will find teachers talking about germing lima beans the water glass way. I guess a wet paper towel sticking to the inside of a water glass is just about the perfect amount of resistance. just enough to give a little resistance to strengthen the root without being too much too stunt it.

Thanks for posting this brother Wakka :gthumb:
I remember this experiment from back in elementary school, always worked like a charm..... K.I.S.S. always works the best.
Why overcomplicate things? :D
Cheers and good green mojo flowin out....

best thing is the seedling starts growing the right way right away.
gonna germ one or two point-up. point-down just to confirm something......

So AZ, did you try it and did the seeds orient themselves?

Glad you asked drumin . the seed themselves didn't orient up/down/left/right but the taproots sure knew where to find water.
Regardless of the seed orientation the tap roots all went down, towards water.
Could have been gravity as well, but I'll put my money on lookin for moisture.

wow! I had completely forgotten about this post.
since it had been impossible to get any clones here at all we pulled some beans out of the fridge and put them in a couple of glasses just the other night.
not sure if they will pop or not. been in the fridge for about three years. but it's either that or nothing.

I will try this on my next batch. The wet paper towel in a bag in a warm dark place has work real nice this last batch. 7/10 popped and 7/7 are now growing into plants. :D
